The XZ3 is a very familiar smartphone, just
like the metal and glass case. However, with a new OLED display and a slightly
increased battery capacity, the XZ3 seems to be the device the XZ2 should have
been in some ways. However, these improvements require a higher price. At $
899, the XPERIA XZ3 is $ 100 more expensive than its predecessor, yet still
urges owners to make compromises that the competition cannot offer. Sony could
have corrected these mistakes; instead, another flagship was delivered that does
not meet the standard of the best Android phones on the market.
Design:
With the XPERIA XZ2, Sony made a long-awaited
change to the design of its smartphones earlier this year. It was certainly a
step in the right direction: the XZ2 had more rounded edges and an 18: 9 aspect
ratio with thinner bezels compared to generations of blocky Sony flagships. The
new approach was a welcome approach, but the XZ2 was far from perfect. It was
thick, big and bulky, with a fingerprint sensor uncomfortable on the back of
the device and an extremely slippery surface that tended to slip off surfaces.
These concerns remain with the XPERIA XZ3. At 6.8 ounces, the XZ3 is not quite
as heavy as the iPhone 8 Plus (7.1 ounces), but its proximity. In fact, the XZ3
is slightly taller and thicker than the handset to be replaced, but the bezels
were not cut any further.
Sony's trademarks, such as stereo front
speakers and a dedicated two-level camera button, play back on the XZ3.
Otherwise, this device looks rather generic, especially if you opt for the
uninspired black model. The models Forest Green and non-USA Bordeaux red are
much more pronounced. However, the poor ergonomics of the XZ3 far outweigh any
aesthetic concerns. Even if you've overcome the odd fingerprint sensor placement,
you'll still have to deal with Side Sense. A new feature that Sony has
introduced with the XZ3 should make life easier, but it quickly becomes a
nuisance.
Display:
OLED
After years of trotting LCD phones while its
competitors switched to newer and better display technology, Sony has finally
released an XPERIA handheld device with an OLED display. The XZ3 has a 6-inch,
curved OLED panel with a resolution of 2880 x 1440. Although it does not
contain as many pixels as the XZ2 Premium's 4K LCD, the screen of the XZ3
brightens and gets under our light at 520 Nits meters, compared to the 442
offered by the XZ2 Premium. The 611-nit Super Retina Display on the iPhone XS
Max still surpasses both, though the XZ3 is at least above the 466-nit average
smartphone.
That's all well and good, but the real reason
why you want the display of the XZ3 is the vivacity of the colors. You can see
the trailer for Spider-Man: In the Spider verse on the Sony phone I was
impressed by the intensity of the sweets. Colorful digital billboards line
Times Square as the famous web singer passes by. The XZ3 drew the neon tones
with a little less heat than the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, though the XZ3
delivered a richer overall picture.
Camera:
There's just one camera on the back of the
XPERIA XZ3: a 19-megapixel (1: 2.0) lens equipped with the Sony Exmor RS sensor
and Bionz imaging technology. On the front there is a 13 MP lens with a
slightly larger aperture of 1: 1.9. Nowadays, it's a bit strange to return to a
one-eyed main camera in a flagship smartphone. This is not necessarily an
indictment of the shooter of the XZ3; the Pixel 2 also uses a sensor and is
still our favorite camera phone. However, Sony was unable to assign portrait
mode to the rear camera of the XZ3, which may be disappointing on some emerging
mobile photos.
