Sony's
XPERIA range of Android devices includes large screen smartphones, phablets and
tablets. With the release of the Sony XPERIA Z3 Tablet Compact, his attention
is now focused on the 8-inch market. It captures Sony's mobile essence of
recent years, but does not have the finishing touches. That is, there are no
disappointments lurking in the background.
A familiar Design:
Unlike
the XPERIA Z3 Compact smartphone, which would like to add a little more depth
to get more volume (and more battery life), the Sony XPERIA Z3 Tablet Compact
has been made thin and lightweight. At just 6.4mm, the Z3 Tablet Compact is
1.1mm thinner than the iPad Mini 2, which is the obvious comparison? Thanks to
the screen ratio, the Z3 tablet is a bit more mailbox than the iPad Mini. It's
relatively comfortable, but if you spend some time with the iPad Mini, it will
feel a bit restrictive. Of course, if you use the tablet for many videos, the
dimensions of Hollywood spectacles and modern television presented in HD will
be much easier. This is done with a lot of plastic in the construction, which
is particularly noticeable on the back of the device. The edges are metallic,
with plastic buffers at the corner to absorb drops and reach a limited extent
if the tablet overheats.
It
sticks to Sony's Omni-Balance design credentials and is clearly in the family
of other XPERIA phones. Given the size of the tablet, the Omni-Balance language
works better with the tablet - provided it has curved edges, the maximum screen
area and a decent back of the tablet, making it feel secure (or at least as
secure as any tablet can be .
Top of the range with some future
proof in the specifications:
As
expected, the XPERIA Z3 Tablet Compact is another Android handset with the
Snapdragon family from Qualcomm. With a 2.5GHz quad-core 801 processor and 3GB
of RAM, the tablet is no problem and should be able to handle most tasks, and it's
a dream to play rich games and graphic experiences. The clock rate is slightly
lower than the ultimate performance, but this helps maintain battery life. With
the inclusion of 3GB of RAM (and a microSD slot for further expansion), the Z3
Tablet Compact remains relevant and future-proof for at least a year, probably
two. The tablet also continues Sony's tradition of making its hardware
watertight and dustproof - in this case IP68 certification level.
One step behind the rest with the
screen:
A
look at the Android assortment from Sony shows that the Japanese company has
never taken any risks or seriously attacked the display. With other
manufacturers pushing for larger, higher resolution screens, Sony has always
lagged a step or two behind. The same approach is shown here with the Z3
tablet. At 1920x1200, the screen will display HD video, but for tablets with
the most pixels, no points will be awarded. As always, Sony relies on bold
colors, deep blacks and proprietary graphics processing technology to make up
for the backlog. The Z3 tablet certainly shows its colors well, though it feels
a bit 'poppy' when looking at natural pictures.
