The
Sony XPERIA L1 is one of the least expensive XPERIA smartphones launched in the
UK in 2017. This £ 150 mobile phone features a 13 megapixel rear view camera
with a Sony-styled sensor to capture detailed photos on a tight budget. You
also get a secondary 5 megapixel front-facing shooter, and both can shoot up to
full HD video. We tested the XPERIA L1 camera by taking a lot of photos and
videos in London. Here's our full review of the XPERIA L1 camera to let you
know if this affordable Sony phone covers your everyday life.
Sony XPERIA L1 Camera - App and User
Experience:
The
XPERIA L1 has Sony's standard camera app for taking photos and videos. However,
this is a slimmed-down version of the camera interface that can be found on
other Sony phones such as the XPERIA XA1 for £ 229, as the L1 has a simpler
snapper. On the one hand, Sony's standard Superior Auto mode has been replaced
by a standard Auto mode. This still automatically focuses on the subject and
selects the best settings for recording a particular recording, although it is
not as smart as the Superior version found on more expensive XPERIAs.
The
XPERIA L1 still offers a full manual mode if you want to make white balance and
shutter speed. However, this also applies to the "special features"
of this camera. They do not have the AR functionality or other bonus modes
offered by the higher quality XPERIA phones. When switching between auto,
manual and video modes, simply move the screen up or down with your finger. You
can also swipe right to jump between the front and back camera.
Sony XPERIA L1 camera - photo quality:
Snapshots
take up with very little delay; Just tap the trigger on the XPERIA L1 and your
picture will be taken almost immediately. However, after taking a photo you
will get a short processing time. This can slow down the speed if you try to
shoot many shots in quick succession. Sony has also no burst mode included. Not
ideal if you want to do an action catch. In terms of photo quality, the XPERIA
L1 is clearly a good handset. On the one hand, contrast turns out to be
particularly painful. At night, shoot a brightly lit area or a black memorial
against a bright sky, and you'll get a mix of supersaturated areas and
cloudiness. Moving subjects appear blurry except in perfect lighting
conditions, while dark scenes are often tarnished with grain. No wonder, given
the lens with f / 2.2 apertures.
Still,
colors are pretty much rendered when light is on your side. You'll also get a
fair amount of detail into each shot to display on a larger screen. If you need
a camera to capture precious memories and lifelong memorabilia, we recommend
increasing your budget and using the XPERIA XA1 instead. However, if you're
happy with a simple point-and-snap device that lets you capture shareable images,
the L1 is just about ready to go.
