When
it hit the market for the first time, the Sony XPERIA Z5 was the culmination of
18 months of incremental improvements to Sony's XPERIA smartphones. Now the
Sony XPERIA Z5 is one of the most popular smartphones. Despite the appearance
of two other versions of the Z5: the small Z5 Compact and the slightly larger
Z5 Premium, which is almost identical, the somewhat superfluous 4K screen. In
addition, there are the newer models Sony XPERIA X, Sony XPERIA XA and Sony
XPERIA XZ, two mobile phones that seem to mean a departure from the Z series as
the smartphone standard carrier of the company.
Sony XPERIA Z5 - Design:
The
XPERIA Z5 earns its place at the forefront of Sony's range of smartphones -
despite its age - and it all starts with this beautiful, almost glass design.
Although Sony has retained the design language that has nurtured it so well in
recent years (so the phone retains the trademark XPERIA front and back and
square profile glass, and both water and IP68 remain the same) full of
refinements that really make a difference. The aesthetic changes are most
subtle: a new XPERIA logo is engraved on the left edge. The metal frame of the
XPERIA Z5 was slightly angled. And Sony has replaced the shiny glass back with
a smooth glass top. The screen is surrounded at the very edge by a slightly
raised lip, which prevents the phone from slipping off sloped surfaces. And in
the colors white, graphite black, gold and green it just looks great.
However,
the biggest variation in the design area is the look of the on / off switch.
Sony's long-known chrome effect circle has now been replaced by an elongated
lozenge that is inserted slightly from the edge to prevent it from being
accidentally pressed. This seems to be a frivolous change on the surface, but
there's a lot more substance in it than it would at first glance. So far, most
smartphones with one of these components have decided to place them under the
Home button or on the back. Both approaches have their problems. With a
one-handed grip, the front reader may be difficult to reach, and there is a
risk of the phone dropping because you hold it close to the bottom edge. Rear
readers are better for one-hand users. However, you cannot use it to unlock a
phone when sitting on a desk.
The
Sony XPERIA Z5 is the best compromise I've met so far. It can be used on a desk
or in your hand and is positioned to naturally fall under your finger or thumb
when losing weight. It also works reliably and fast. It is the most
sophisticated fingerprint reader ever. The only design change I have not
completely sold is the repositioning of the volume rocker from right next to
the on / off button to the right edge, just above the camera shutter. This is a
stunning design choice and makes it difficult to set the volume with one-handed
use of the thumb.
