Sony
offers the XPERIA XA2 Plus another solid midrange phone. In the test, however,
we found some weaknesses. Although there is nothing wrong with the performance,
the battery life convinces and the image quality of the display is
satisfactory. The equipment left a lot to be desired and with the camera you
have little joy. The selling price is clearly too high for this mixed result.
The idiosyncratic shape of the Sony XPERIA XA2 Plus has not changed
significantly compared to the normal version: the side edges right and left are
completely round, while the Sony phone is flat top and bottom and the edges
look milled. Sony calls this "diamond cut". In contrast to the XPERIA
XA2, only the upper and lower edges of the housing are made of aluminum, the
sides and the back are made of plastic. Gorilla glass protects the display.
The
XPERIA XA2 Plus is therefore much different in the hand than smartphone
alternatives. Part of the phone is rounder and sometimes even more nervous. The
unfamiliar "diamond cut" at the top and bottom edge takes getting
used to and feels especially sharp at the beginning. The transitions of the
individual housing parts are visible and palpable as seams. The build quality
is nothing to complain about. The plastic cover looks chic and keeps
fingerprints away. Overall, however, the XPERIA XA2 Plus is a rather bulky
model. The dimensions of 15.7 x 7.5 inches are still normal for a 6.0-inch
mobile phone. With a thickness of one centimeter and a weight of over 200
grams, it moves at the lower end of the mobility scale. However, this has the
cell phone in common with other XPERIA models. The design of the Sony
smartphones certainly has their fans, but for newcomers it takes some getting
used to. Stable it definitely feels. As with other XPERIA phones, there is a
dedicated button to fire the camera in addition to the power button and volume
control at the bottom of the device frame.
The display of the Sony XPERIA XA2 Plus there
are first criticisms. Compared to the XPERIA XA2, the LC display has clearly
grown to a smooth diagonal of 6 inches. Since the resolution was not increased
to the same extent, but only from Full HD to Full HD Plus (2,160 x 1,080
pixels), the pixel density drops slightly. At 403 ppi, however, it is still
satisfactory. It gets more difficult with maximum brightness: In our test, the
XPERIA XA2 Plus display only reaches 218.7 candelas per square meter. This is a
negative record in our mobile leaderboard and leads to a noticeable
deterioration when the display is used outdoors in sunlight.
The Sony XPERIA XA2 Plus is a mid-range phone
with midrange hardware. In this area, the device fully lives up to
expectations. Like the XPERIA XA2, the Plus version also uses a Qualcomm
Snapdragon 630 eight-core processor. It's not the latest model, but the
processor has proven itself. Compared to the normal version, Sony has increased
the memory of the XPERIA XA2 Plus by one gigabyte to 4 GB. All apps are running
smoothly and apart from the most demanding games, there should be no performance
issues.
It gets more difficult when installing the
XPERIA XA2 Plus. The positive first: All interfaces of WLAN over LTE to
Bluetooth and NFC have current standards. Restrictions are not to be feared
here. Fortunately, Sony has not opted for the now common Combo mode in the
memory cards, in which the second slot of the dual-SIM function is abused - the
XPERIA XA2 Plus has a "real" micro SD memory card slot.
