The
XPERIA Z5 is a major improvement in the XPERIA Z3+, with a new fingerprint
sensor and attractive design, but with some minor issues to prevent. The Sony
XPERIA Z5 feels a little different. After years of premature handset updates
from Sony with minimal improvements (the XPERIA Z3 + in May was no exception),
this ultimately feels like a worthwhile advance over its predecessor.
Originally, the XPERIA Z5 price was priced at 599 USD or 549 GBP, but since the
announcement of XPERIA X and XPERIA XZ there has been a price drop.
Design and Specifications:
Sony
had to revise the design of the XPERIA Z series and this time there were some
big changes. It's still edged and backed with glass, but this time it's a
frosted material instead of the translucent glass that we've seen every XPERIA
Z1 all iteration. The edges were rounded off a bit and the placement of the
buttons on one edge was changed. The color choices for the XPERIA Z5 are green,
black, gold and white. Everyone looks great, although the gold version is the
most sophisticated. I had the black and gold versions for my review.
Previously, the backs of Sony phones were fingerprint magnets, but this new
frosted glass leaves marks behind and looks much nobler from the back than the
XPERIA Z3 +.
This
time the brand is more tasteful. The name of XPERIA is engraved on the side of
the phone. I like the fact that Sony also includes the NFC logo here. It makes
it easy to know where to click, which is something that other Android
manufacturers can learn. The camera is in the upper left corner, the flash is
below it, and there is a little sensor detail.
Sony
is also smoothing the edge of the XPERIA Z5. For generations, these palms felt
quite sharp, so this is a welcome improvement. Although the design of the XPERIA
Z5 still feels a lot, it is more comfortable than the XPERIA Z2. There is also
a hat in these corners that helps absorb the impact when you drop it - a
feature introduced on the XPERIA Z3, but it still has a big advantage over the
Sony Z series. There is only one flip on the XPERIA Z5, which covers the micro
SD and Nano SIM slots. The other ports around the phone are waterproof, so
there is no need for Sony's extra protection for the enthusiasm of early
phones.
Fewer
flaps are a good thing - you didn't pull them out to charge your phone at night
or you need to worry about them being broken (this did happen: I managed to do
this easily on the XPERIA Z2 tablet). The top edge of the XPERIA Z5 is a
waterproof 3.5mm headphone jack with a micro USB port on the bottom edge for
charging and data transfer. The right hand edge is very different from other
XPERIA phones. The power button has moved down halfway along the edge. It is
now silver and flush with the edge of the phone. This is also the location of
the fingerprint sensor - the position of the right thumb is great when you are
holding the phone. Sadly, the Sony XPERIA Z5 is a biometric power button in the
United States. It is in the perfect location for taking landscape photos, but
it's not very good at portraits. Between the two is the volume rocker, which
really feels bad.
The
volume rocker should be located above the power button for easier access.
Whenever I try to change the volume, I lose control and the phone almost slips
away from my hands. If you are left-handed, it may be the perfect location for
your fingertips, although the rest of the button layout will be less than
satisfactory. The design of the front of the phone has not changed much. The
border on the side of the screen is slightly smaller to allow for a smaller
phone without changing the screen size.
