Sony is becoming more and more important in
the mobile sector. The high-end phones are becoming increasingly boring and
forgetful, highlighted by the recent Sony XPERIA X. Meanwhile, they fall behind
thanks to OnePlus 3, Moto G4 Plus and Vodafone Smart Ultra 7 back. Sony needs
something new, something exciting. Enter the Sony XPERIA XA. Is this the phone
to interest people in the Japanese brand's smartphone business?
Sony XPERIA
XA - Design:
While the boring XPERIA X fades into the
middle of the road, the XPERIA XA has a spark that sets it apart from the most
affordable phones. It's the near edge-to-edge display that attracts attention.
It's not nearly as pronounced as the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, but it's a design
choice that's rarely found in the lower end of the phone market.
It looks good, but it feels very compact too.
It nestles easily in one hand and my thumb can move around the 5-inch display
without too much stretch. With so few smaller phones on the market, XPERIA XA
instantly becomes a tantalizing prospect for those who do not want something
with a 5.5-inch or 5.7-inch screen. It's not as pluggable as the dinky iPhone
SE, but it's as close as you can get to a running Android.
It is also light, probably because metal is
kept to a minimum and is used sparingly only on the sides. The back is a rather
cheap plastic that easily picks up oily residue and quickly becomes slippery,
but has not got any scratches during my time. Instead of using the flattened
home button that Sony has changed to the XPERIA Z5 series, the XPERIA XA
features a metallic rotary switch. It is tiny and appealing, but it lacks a
fingerprint scanner. Some may say it's hard to beat a 240-pound phone for this
failure, but Moto managed to push one into the 199-Moto G4, and the vast
majority of low-priced Honor phones also have them.
Sony XPERIA XA - Display:
The
design is not necessarily budget, but the 5-inch 720p LCD screen. I expect that
a phone for at least £ 240 has at least a 1080p screen. The display is one of
the better 720p panels I've ever used, but it's far from great. There is also a
significant lack of brightness. Normally I would hold a phone at about 60%
brightness - I'm not a fan of auto brightness - but with the XPERIA XA I have
to keep it constantly at about 80-90% so it's readable in the majority of
lighting conditions.
The
viewpoints are good, which often causes cheaper phones, as well as the view to
the outside, but for the price, I expected more. Motorola managed to install an
FHD panel in a £ 169 mobile phone, as did Huawei's Honor 5X. 720p spread over a
5-inch display is still fine, but my eye can detect individual pixels, and
videos and especially images are out of focus. The display fades in comparison
to the Moto G4 and iPhone SE.
