Sony's
10.1-inch XPERIA Z2 tablet is 6.4mm thick and weighs 439g. It is supported by a
2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of
internal memory. Nowadays it is no longer enough to make a good-looking tray.
In order to succeed in a crowded sector, manufacturers must also offer
outstanding features. It is to be denied that Sony's 10.1-inch XPERIA Z2 tablet
is disappointed on the other side of the equation. One area in which the Sony
XPERIA Z2 Tablet has an advantage over the competition is the fact that it is
waterproof like the XPERIA Z smartphones. The degree of protection IP58 means
that it should survive immersion in 1.5 m of water for up to 30 minutes. I do
not see many office situations where this might be relevant, but it might help
if you repeat the workday during a bath. For a good measure, it is also
protected from the ingress of dust.
Sony
has made a great effort to make the XPERIA Z2 Tablet thin and lightweight - at
just 6.4mm, it's the thinnest 10.1-inch tablet I've ever had. Compare for
example the 7.5 mm of the iPad Air and the 7.9 mm strength of the Samsung
Galaxy Note 10.1 of 2014. The XPERIA Z2 Tablet is also a lightweight with 439 g
- the iPad Air comes with 469 g in weight, while the Galaxy Note 10.1 weighs
540 g. The XPERIA Z2 Tablet has a thin and lightweight credential that seems a
bit weak, at least to me. I do not want to put this in my travel bag without a
solid protective cover; On the other hand, I'm especially happy when I let the
iPad Air clatter around with just a smart protective case.
A
design curiosity is the screen bezel, which is huge. There is a trade-off
between a wide bezel that does not accidentally activate the touchscreen with
your fingers, and so wide that it looks old-fashioned. Sony did not do well
here. The screen itself is also not very impressive. Although Sony's trilimino
and x-reality technologies improve image quality, the display does not quite do
that for us. It's great for a range of indoor activities, from website viewing
to text reading and movie viewing. However, it lacks brightness, so the image
quality suffers outdoors. The screen resolution of 1920x1200 pixels (224 pixels
per inch or ppi) of the XPERIA Z2 tablet is behind the high-end competitors.
For example, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 has a 1,600 x 2,560-pixel display
(299ppi), while the iPad Air packs 1,536 x 2,049 pixels in a 9.7-inch (264ppi)
display. This water resistance already mentioned is made possible by flaps that
cover the combined Micro SD and SIM slot as well as the Micro USB 2.0 port. I
found the flaps a bit fiddly to lift them - and I'm not a fingernail biter.
There
are two speakers on the front of the chassis that you may not even notice as
the grids are tiny. However, they work well: the stereo effect is clearly
audible and the quality is good enough to use the tablet as a background music
player while working. This is a big improvement in the sound output of the
XPERIA Z2 smartphone we reviewed recently. However, the speaker's position is
not ergonomically smart: I covered the grids with one palm when I held the
tablet in landscape orientation - until I realized I could turn it upside down
and have the speaker grilles on top, with the logo Sony stood on its head.
Sony's Android skin seems to work better on the 10.1-inch XPERIA Z2 tablet than
on the 5.2-inch XPERIA Z2 smartphone. There is more room to expand, and
landscape fits better for some apps than the portrait mode screen. The Walkman
app is a typical example - it just looks prettier.
Sony
has expanded Android 4.4 with its usual proprietary apps for audio, movies,
PlayStation and more. It's a potentially complex mix for Android novices, not
least because some Android features are duplicated and the icon design
conventions are not uniform. Sony might be well advised to address this aspect
of its attitude towards Android devices and at least unify the design approach.
