Although
Apple and Samsung have cornered most of the smartphone market, it seems that
Sony is still not giving up its XPERIA phones. Alleged press reports of the
upcoming XPERIA XA3 have now surfaced, showing a design that is not only
radically different from previous XPERIA phones, but also from other
smartphones in general. The images in question, published by WinFuture, show a
more square design for the handset. It's not very different from curvy cell
phones of this generation, but it's more like the Essential Phone in its
boxiness than an iPhone whose corners rejuvenate dramatically.
Sony XPERIA XA3 display:
But
the shape is just a starter. The real conversation starter is the screen. The
XPERIA XA3 seems to have an ultra-wide display with an aspect ratio of 21: 9.
In the last few years there have been plenty of phones with 18: 9 displays, but
Sony seems to be pushing things even further. An aspect ratio of 21: 9 means
that the XPERIA XA3 is an excellent phone to watch movies as most movies are
displayed in this configuration today. These movies would not have black bars
on the top and bottom edges when playing - an effect known as letterboxing -
for a more immersive experience.
The pros and cons:
But
that also means that anything that is not set to 21: 9 would produce black bars
on both sides of the screen in landscape orientation. This must deal with the
Tradeoff users. Another advantage of 18: 9 phones over more dramatic aspect
ratios is that they are easier to use with a single hand. A phone with a 21: 9
display would make it even bigger, making certain screen icons and selections
difficult to reach with just one hand. Samsung solves this with its One UI,
which divides the screen into lower and upper halves. The top half shows most
of the visual elements, and the bottom half places all the clickable elements.
Even if the screen is larger than the one you're comfortable with, the user
interface makes up for it by making interaction easier.
The
renderings unfortunately do not provide any insight into the XPERIA XA3 user
interface. Therefore, no one can guess at the moment whether Sony will put the
big screen with a user interface that makes everything accessible with one
hand. For all other elements it becomes clear that the XPERIA XA3 has a system
with two cameras. No fingerprint sensor is in sight; Maybe Sony will integrate
it back into the power switch. At the bottom there is a USB Type-C connector,
which is removed by speaker grille. Expect further details as Mobile World
Congress takes place later this month.
