After the XPERIA XA2 and XA2 Ultra, Sony
recently launched another midrange in 2018: the XPERIA XA2 Plus. Sony has made
it difficult not only in flagship but also in the mid-market segment. At the
time of writing there are devices on the market that have all sorts of
features, such as the exorbitant camera numbers on the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018)
and Galaxy A9 (2018) or very interesting specifications for a great price. A
good example of this is the Pocophon F1. The Sony XPERIA XA2 Plus does not
immediately look like the most interesting option on paper, but to know that a
field test is absolutely necessary. And that's GSMinfo.nl for you.
Design:
The design of all Sony XPERIA devices remained
untouched for years. Only since this year, the expensive XZ line shows a
different design. Although the lower series has made a design change, it is
much less severe than, for example, the XPERIA XZ3. The XPERIA XA2 Plus also
retains the characteristic square appearance that we know from Sony. The sides,
however, are rather arched so that it fits comfortably in the hand.
With a weight of not less than 205 grams, the
midrange of the Japanese is absolutely not a lightweight. Although the entire
construction of the device is mostly made of plastic, the device feels very high
quality due to its weight. The back is also not made of "normal"
plastic, but with a special mat layer. This gives the smartphone a contemporary
look and feel that we really appreciate. Remember that it is really big, almost
as big as the Galaxy Note 9.
It is also striking that the camera is
positioned very high with an LED flash and a fingerprint scanner underneath.
Unlike Sony Topper, the device is located in an ergonomically responsible
location. Are you so in love with this phone that you spontaneously fall into
the local swimming pool? No problem: The Sony XPERIA XA2 Plus is IP68
certified. The smartphone is therefore completely waterproof and you can also
use it underwater to take photos, for example. Sony has determined that its
IP68 certified devices are waterproof for 30 minutes at a depth of 1.50 meters.
Display:
The Sony XPERIA XA2 Plus uses a 6.0-inch
screen with a Full HD + resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels, which means an aspect
ratio of 18: 9. In contrast to the latest flagship in this case is still an LCD
screen. There's nothing wrong with that on paper. On the contrary, almost no
midrange has an OLED screen. However, there is certainly the necessary quality
difference between different LCD panels. Although the XA2 Plus has a fairly
sharp display, it quickly becomes clear that the colors look a bit dull. The
screen is equipped with a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 5, so it must be
resistant to light scratches and collision marks. In addition, the XPERIA XA2
Plus screen has a relatively high maximum brightness. The minimum screen
brightness is a bit bright, but it is possible. It is a pity that there are no
more blue light filters that make the screen much more bearable in the evening.
We also tested the automatic brightness, but we did not have the desired screen
brightness.
Hardware and
battery:
The XPERIA XA2 Plus is equipped with a
Snapdragon 630, which is clocked at a maximum of 2.2 GHz. In its price range,
the 630 is certainly not the fastest, but Sony has done everything possible to
optimize it as much as possible. Simple, daily-used apps like Chrome, WhatsApp,
Reddit and the like start quickly and effortlessly. Playing is not a problem
either. Whether you choose big guns from Pokémon Go, are more of a temple
runner or just love the light slither; The XPERIA XA2 Plus can handle this,
often in the highest possible graphical settings.
The battery of the XPERIA XA2 Plus belongs
with a battery capacity of 3580 mAh to the larger ones in its segment. However,
there are many smartphones with large batteries that disappoint in practice.
That's certainly not the case with the XA2 Plus. If you use your smartphone
from time to time, the rule is more than two days before the exception. Even
with intensive use with lots of navigation, Spotify and games you can reach one
and a half days. Unfortunately, no quick charger is included, so the loading
takes a lot of time. It takes about three hours to set the XA2 Plus from 0 to
100 percent.
