The
XPERIA L2 and a trial period with it, I'm ready to give an opinion on the new
entry-level smartphone from Sony. Is it a tempting device? Is it worth the
price? Find it out in our full review.
Sony XPERIA L2 design and build
quality:
The
design of the XPERIA L2 is no different from the classic, iconic lines of
Sony's Omnibalance design. The smartphone has a plastic frame and a back. But
do not expect a nice polished glass-like polycarbonate. It is a simple plastic
that feels anything but high quality in the palm of your hand. As soon as I
started testing the device, I immediately noticed that the thin plastic tilts
inward when pressed against the back of the device until it touches the
built-in battery. The curvature of the back of the device makes it a bit more
ergonomic, but leaves an empty space above the battery.
The
smartphone is also great for a 5.5-inch device, which is particularly
noticeable when you hold it in the hand due to the large aperture. The
old-school 16: 9 design, combined with these large bezels, makes the L2 really
unwieldy. Nevertheless, the fingerprint reader is positioned so that it is easy
to reach with the index finger. Unfortunately it is one of the slowest scanners
I have been able to test for a long time.
A display that cannot compete with the
competition:
The
panel has only HD resolution, which is disappointing given the price of this
unit. As you will learn by reading, this is not the only specification that
does not do justice to the price. I found the brightness of the display
inadequate, especially in the sun. The fact that the light sensor slowly
detects the ambient light and makes adjustments has not helped. Overall, the
colors are perfect, even if the blacks are not as deep as an OLED panel. The
viewing angles of the display are good, and none of the blacks turned gray, as
is often the case with LCD screens in this area.
We
tested the display with a special device, the Spyder Elite 5, to objectively
measure its properties. The color representation is not so bad, but the maximum
brightness is too low. In addition, the display is low-contrast with a result
of only 806: 1. Full data is available in the following table:
The hardware is not enough for the
price range:
The
processor of XPERIA L2 is really disappointing. A Snapdragon 400 series would
definitely have been a better choice than the 1.5 GHz quad-core Mediatek
MT6737T with ARM Cortex-A53 architecture. The 3GB of RAM is more than enough,
but the smartphone's CPU cannot keep up with basic software features such as
home screen animations or switching between the various open apps. The
performance of scrolling content such as simple PDF files or system settings is
good, but do not try to go too fast while browsing on Facebook or in your
Instagram feed. The 32 GB internal eMMC memory is more than enough and can be
expanded with a Micro SD card. The audio experience with the XPERIA L2 with
headphones is fine. The smartphone still has a popular 3.5mm headphone jack and
some small software accessories on other Sony smartphones such as ClearAudio +,
Equalizer and a feature that normalizes the sound between songs to avoid
sudden, loud changes. There is the AptX Bluetooth audio codec, but not AptXHD
or LDAC, as is common with the latest smartphones from the Japanese company.
