Sony
has replaced its strong XPERIA XZ2 flagship with the even better XPERIA XZ3
after only six months on the market ... and with the XPERIA XZ4 it could do the
same thing again. The XPERIA XZ4 and XZ4 Compact are set to roll next time, and
if true, they will be on display at MWC 2019 in February. If so, we could see
an appropriate release in March or April.
Given
the short time span between the two, we have seen a minor design improvement between
the XPERIA XZ2 and the XPERIA XZ3. How about the XPERIA XZ4? The back and sides
along with a sleeve (top), and it shows what looks like a flatter back than the
last two phones. It is also very large, which suggests a possible aspect ratio
of 21: 9 for the screen. The underground does not seem to be quite as extreme
as it used to be, but it has a pretty decent quality. The speculative rendering
at the top of this story, also by IceUniverse, shows what the supposed 21: 9
aspect ratio might look like. Meanwhile, MySmartPrice and OnLeaks have made
joint renderings based on alleged CAD data, which correspond to the IceUniverse
leaks on the back and have fewer apertures than the XPERIA XZ3 on the front.
With the XPERIA XZ4 Compact, speculative renderings based on allegedly leaked
CAD data show a similar back and side area, but still a fairly large portion of
the upper and lower bezels on the front. However, it is possible that the XZ4
Compact will not even be released: Don Mesa, Vice President Marketing of Sony
Mobile, told Digital Trends in January 2019 that they believe buyers are now
more interested in larger phones.
The
XPERIA XZ3 has made a big leap in screen quality over the XZ2 by adding an OLED
panel and increasing the resolution to Quad HD. It is one of the best screens.
And frankly, we do not expect much difference. It probably uses the same
technology as the brilliant panel of the XPERIA XZ3. However, MySmartPrice
suggests a 6.5-inch panel for the supposedly larger screen - larger than the
XZ3's 6-inch screen. What you see above is supposedly a look at the tempered
film cover of the XPERIA XZ4 compared to the size of the Apple iPhone XS Max,
alongside the movie from two other phones. It comes from leaker IceUniverse and
gives a sense of the dimensions of the handset in the supposedly super high 21:
9 displays.
The
flagships from Sony have used the high-end Qualcomm processor reliably, and
this should apply again in 2019. We expect the Snapdragon 855 chip to be seen
from the founding of this year's Snapdragon 845. Snapdragon 855 promises a
threefold increase in performance for AI applications as well as computer
vision capabilities for cameras for detecting people and objects. And the
smaller 7nm production process can also provide more overall performance.
While
other flagship phones were packed into additional cameras, the XZ3 stuck with
one on the back. However, this could change significantly for the next version.
The aforementioned leaked rendering shows three rear cameras connected to
colleagues in the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and P20 Pro in this department. We have
not heard any hard details about the specifications of these cameras, but
hopefully we'll get a better shooter experience than the pretty good XZ3.
