You
do not have to spend a fortune on a phone. We've said it a hundred times, but
top-end phones like the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the iPhone X still seem to be the
dream phones of most people. The Sony XPERIA XA1 is a bit more practical
overall. It's the kind of phone that many can afford, or when a contract does
not cost as much as a good gym membership.
Sony
has the design of this phone in some ways it works and feels smooth, with metal
in the right places. This is also one of the cheapest phones you'll find with a
camera that would not have been out of place on a flagship a year or two ago.
Not every element is perfect. The screen resolution is only 720p, not 1080p,
and there is no fingerprint scanner that is anything but standard on mid-range
phones. If you cannot stand these tradeoffs, the Sony
XPERIA XA1 is an excellent and affordable mobile phone.
Design and Display:
Sony
XPERIA XA1 XPERIA XZ is a smaller and narrower version. However, how it is
structured is something else. Instead of lots of glass and metal, this is a
predominantly plastic phone with curved metal panels on the sides to give your
hands the cool, hard feel that plastic lacks. It actually took a while for us
to realize that the back is not metal, because the XPERIA XA1 feels like a
dense little brick. Sony has done well to make this affordable design look
classy.
It
has a more expensive look than, for example, the Moto G5, which reverses the
style of the Sony XPERIA XA1 with a metal bezel on the back and plastic
elsewhere. This 8mm thick phone is also quite thin and has some of the thinnest
screen environments on all XPERIA phones, regardless of price. Although the
Sony XPERIA XA1 has rather large empty black areas above and below the display,
this seems long and slender, but not more difficult. Long and slim is often
better than short and blunt. It also has the most Sony design trademarks that can
be seen on other XPERIA phones. The power button is the small metal point that
XPERIAs had before it was doubled as a finger scanner, and on the right side is
a physical camera button. You do not see them too often anymore. This phone is
a good choice if you want a minimalist style without paying too much, and some
of you may even like the feel of the much larger Sony XPERIA XZ Premium. The
phone is a small handful. While the sleek bezels are helpful, the key to the
Sony XPERIA XA1's outstanding pocket features is simple: it has a fairly small
screen, a 5-inch diameter, and a 720p resolution.
The
color is respectful and lively. The XZ Premium lacks performance, which can
provide incredible saturation for an LCD phone, but the XPERIA XA1 offers a
good balance between punch and natural look. The display is also super bright
when you need it, and the contrast is very good. Maximum backlight and outdoor
visibility is excellent. It's still one of the most expensive phones that still
use a 720p screen, so do not buy if you notice the slight pixelation and do
not bother. The Sony XPERIA XA1 also has special image enhancement modes that
make your photos and videos look either more powerful or supersaturated. We
recommend that you do not use them to view your own photos because they look
completely different when you transfer them to another device or upload them to
Facebook. It's a bit like applying an Instagram filter that only you can see.
