The
Sony XPERIA Z5 Premium was the first time that we've seen a Sony big screen
since the XPERIA Z Ultra, which was equipped with a huge 6.4-inch display. In
comparison, the Z5 Premium is moderate with a 5.5-inch offer.
The
XPERIA Z5 Premium cost a lot when it was originally launched at £ 579 / $ 1,199
(approximately $ 953). But over a year later you can buy the XPERIA Z5 Premium
for only 400 euros (about 480 euros). Although the XPERIA Z5 Premium has long
been on the market, it is still not available in the US and Sony has not
explained why. If you live in the US, you can buy the device from a third
party, but Sony does not sell the phone directly. The XPERIA Z5 Premium has a
lot of hype for its 4K display, but many other features must be in place and
correct if the phone is to match its high-end bill.
Design Features:
Sony
has its own design philosophy and has been sticking to it since the original XPERIA
Z, with only minor changes to each new version. The XPERIA Z5 and XPERIA Z5 Compact
are characterized by the way the rear construction has been changed from clear
to frosted glass. Unfortunately Sony did not consider the XPERIA Z5 Premium
suitable. Instead, Sony has decided to keep the clear glass of the XPERIA Z3 +
and fingerprints will be captured as before as you touch them.
The
XPERIA Z5 Premium is a lot heavier than you would expect a phone in 2015, with
a weight of 180 g, but even heavier in the hand - it was the first thing I
noticed when I picked it up. Of course weight is not always a bad thing - it's
good to know that your phone does not fly away in the gust of wind. But the XPERIA
Z5 Premium is big everywhere and sometimes hard to use because it's so big -
and I do not have very small hands, so anyone with smaller gloves will have
difficulty. The edges of the XPERIA Z5 Premium are made of aluminum with a
high-gloss texture. However, these can easily be confused with plastic. In
fact, I have been working for some time. The edges feel much less valuable with
this high gloss on the top. This is a problem if the edges of the XPERIA Z5
were really added to the design. This means that the Z5 Premium does not look
convincingly "first class" and feels a bit slippery in the hand. I
sometimes noticed while holding the phone that I was nervous that it would fall
out of my hand.
Sony
has also integrated the reinforced corners of the XPERIA Z5 to prevent the
phone from breaking when it lands on one of them. On the right side of the
phone, about halfway down, is the fingerprint sensor, which acts as a power
button. This is a useful position and makes unlocking the handset very easy.
The volume rocker is just below it, and if you're right-handed, getting used to
it can be quite tricky. I'd rather put it over the on / off switch where my fingers
could reach it a bit easier. Below the rocker is the camera key. This is again
a good position, as you will not accidentally hit it when making a call. The
camera is within easy reach if you want to shoot in landscape mode. Previous
Sony phones were covered with fiddly little flaps that tend to tear off, and
fortunately, the Z5 Premium has only one, at the top left edge. It's easier to
use than the previous examples - and the slot below contains the Micro SD and
Nano SIM cards, so you do not have to mess around with them often anyway.
