The
tablet computer has been on the market for more than two decades, but as
portable machines they were not serious competitors. Too weak, too small, bad
pen technology, too expensive. Most professional designers, whether you create
3D graphics, complex 2D animation, or other compute-intensive work, need
powerful computers. This is one reason why desktop computers are so necessary
today, even if they are stationary: there are no limits to power consumption.
All high-end components of a desktop will surpass the most powerful laptops for
a few years. Laptops take two to three years to catch up.
Not
so with the VAIO Z Canvas. The 2.2 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor is a
generation of generation and more powerful than the most expensive chip found
in the MacBook Pro or Surface Book. The Surface Book is two generations ahead
of us, but there is a clear difference: the amount of energy going to the chip.
The Z-screen can record almost twice the power and indicates this; the
performance of this VAIO is excellent. Our test model easily outperformed any
competitor.
And
it's still small with the same 12.3-inch screen size as the Surface Pro 4, the
same resolution of 2,560 x 1,704 and an equally impressive display. The color
accuracy is exceptional and the Z Canvas is very bright, very clear and
delivers colors with 95% of the RGB spectrum. Each unit is calibrated
internally and it is displayed. We successfully used the display for photo
editing and design, and we expect the results to be from a much more expensive
monitor. Despite the high-quality processor, the battery life is not
abominable. Normally, four to five hours of easy surfing the Internet are
needed. Under heavier loads, however, it drops to about three. This may sound
terrible to anyone looking for 12 hours of uninterrupted operation, but this is
not the computer. It's a stationary machine with a battery good enough to go to
the café or schedule a couch time.
It is also decent for everyday use:
Due
to the high-end components, the VAIO is also suitable for non-design
applications. It supports two external 4K displays and runs well with three
monitors. It has enough ports to connect everything you need, but you'll need a
USB hub to get the desktop setup right. The Z Canvas is a weird but functional notebook.
The display is excellent and is great for multimedia, although the battery only
holds one and a half movies. The supplied keyboard is large and works great
with comfortable buttons and a neat track pad. Even with the keyboard I mostly
used the pen, partly because of the precision and partly because of the easy
handling.
Unlike
the Surface Pro 4, the stand is located at the bottom of the tablet. It is
fully adjustable and drops 90 degrees. The kickstand is located on the bottom
of the tablet, so it is fully adjustable and goes down 90 degrees. For drawing,
this is a life saver and its set so perfectly that you do not have to worry
about it being moved accidentally. For easy use, although the canvas is much;
the keyboard also serves as screen protection, but is too big for a small desk.
You will be the joke who takes both sides of the bank with this machine. It's
also hard to magnetize 2.67 pounds alone and 3.42 pounds with the keyboard,
more than most laptops. And it's a touch of more than half an inch or two
stacked iPhones. That said, this VAIO does not win any beauty awards, even
though the complete aluminum frame is excellent - but it's not a typical
computer for end users.
