Sony
threw VAIO overboard more than a year ago, but the iconic PC brand is not dead.
VAIO is sold to Japan Industrial Partners mutual fund and has returned with two
new PCs announced today in Tokyo. The VAIO Z and VAIO Z Canvas are the first
VAIO self-designed and released devices - the first being the company's
flagship, a $ 1,600 Ultrabook with a flip-up back that allows users to convert
it from laptop to pseudo-tablet is a cheaper, smaller and lighter option with a
removable keyboard.
The
full-blooded VAIO Z is available in two variants, each with a 13.3-inch
display, an Intel i7 or i5 processor, an aluminum-carbon case, and an SSD that
the company says is the computer can boot from standby mode in 0.3 seconds. A
hinge on the back of the Z-housing allows the display of the laptop to be
rotated. Either he can point outward with the laptop closed to make a tablet,
or he can be turned to show others what you're working on. VAIO calls the
flagship Z a "monster PC," but says it will not chew performance too
fast. For the high price, the company offers a machine with a battery life of
more than 15.5 hours - the longest time that a VAIO laptop ever had.
The
Z Canvas is the "Monster Tablet" from VAIO, a 12.3-inch device with
an i7 processor, 256 GB SSD and up to 16 GB of internal memory. Like its bigger
brother, the Z Canvas can also change its shape: The device has a removable
keyboard that allows the user to get up like a laptop or hollow out the
keyboard for a while and use a pen like a tablet. It is a bit later than the
actual Z - since the larger machine is to be pre-ordered in Japan today, the Z
Canvas is due only in May.
VAIO
began selling laptops after the 2013 sale, but the VAIO Fit and VAIO Pro
devices were products that were developed while the brand lived at Sony. The
new laptops are the first VAIO products to be developed and launched since the
launch of Sony's new brand. They borrowed a name from VAIO's past. Sony
released a VAIO Z11 when the new bosses of the brand in 2012 emphasized that
the letter had been selected as "zero" for the new devices, which
means a fresh start. The machines look slim enough, but for the time being the
new beginning are limited to Japan - VAIO has not said when Z and Z Canvas will
be released worldwide.
