Sony
has never really been a tablet pioneer. The company has offered some decent
slates in the past, but nothing that you strongly recommend to a friend. The
Tablet Z was good - but nobody remembers you as mediocre. Example: We recognize
the Kindle Fire HDX as having a solid experience, highlighted by a unique
service in Mayday. The Nexus 7 is now important for its affordability and
high-performance specifications. The iPad is the obvious tablet emperor, but
even this crown has lost some of its luster and gives way to a relentless
Android invasion. Can Sony's latest tablet consolidate its status as a bonafide
competitor? From a hardware standpoint, this is one of the better devices
you'll likely find. It is elegant, thin and full of impressive technology. It's
hard to understand the technology behind Sony's new favorite. it contradicts
logic and almost does not seem to be real. But then you start leafing through
the software, and all of a sudden everything gets mixed up.
You
want fast and smooth? Look elsewhere. Even with today's super specifications,
the software is no faster than it was two or three years ago. Such good
hardware is held back by a substandard software experience.
Hardware:
The
Sony XPERIA Z2 Tablet is a flawless example of engineering rare outside of the
Apple camp. Other tablets are safe enough. But here's what you're getting at,
and your mind is struggling to understand how much technology can fit in such a
small chassis. The thin, the lightness; It almost feels like Sony forgot to add
the internal components as if they had an early prototype plucked from the
factory. It's not conspicuous, but the minimal approach works perfectly and
gives users an incredible means to consume content.
Sony
has always produced very powerful hardware, and we've seen that in the past.
I've used this particular device in the last few days and I'm still really
impressed every time I pick it up. At only 15.5 ounces and 6.4 mm thick, the Z2
Tablet is lightweight and sturdy, lightweight and impressively built. And the
whole thing has IP58 protection, which means you can tow this thing into the
river (and into the water) without damage. (The exact rating says five feet of
fresh water for half an hour.
Compared
to its predecessor, the Z2 Tablet looks much the same. That is, this is a black
rectangle with rounded corners and flat edges held together by an aluminum
frame and tempered glass on the front. The back is a nice, frosted, soft handle
that is not slippery, though greasy fingertips will definitely smudge the stain.
And good luck to completely wipe away those little spots. They will refuse to
leave.
Stuck:
With
Android 4.4 on board you expect this thing to fly. Android has evolved into a
silky, smooth experience that is both efficient and virtually free of delays. It
still does not quite look like iOS, but pretty damn near. And if you have the
specifications that the Z2 tablet does, things should move like a luxury car.
Unfortunately, Sony has made the impossible possible. Well, I do not think
impossible. But the software is often sluggish. Hindering what had the
potential to be the best Android tablet.
It's
not that the skin of Sony looks bad, because it does not work at all. In fact,
it is one of the preferable skins. But you lack the smoothness you would find
on an iPad or even a Nexus 7. You know there is a problem when you scroll
between the startup screens and a noticeable stutter occurs. Now move to the
next screen. For hardware that is so finely tuned, it's a disappointment to see
that kind of performance. There is a kind of separation between hardware and
software, a kind of synthesis that you would see in a Vanilla version of
Android. However, I noticed a slight bump when I changed the basic wallpaper.
Maybe that's the main responsibility, even if it should not be.
When
playing a game or movie, the device is fast enough and you will not notice any
problems. But it is only when starting applications and when scrolling through
the operating system as a whole the problem seems to exist. For a good
impression the hardware leaves, the software gives a nice, quick kick to the
shin. Fortunately, this is Android, and luckily there are other starters in
Google Play, such as the ever-popular Nova. Just hit this bad boy and you'll be
fine. the nightmare will be over. You will never have to deal with stuttering
or delays again. It is unacceptable that you need to do a quick operation to
iron out the kinks. But the hardware is worth the effort.
