After
the high of the XPERIA Z3 and its excellent battery life, Sony suffered from
overheating problems when tracking the Z3 +. The XPERIA Z5 misses the number
four and has much to prove. To say that Sony is an iterative design would be an
understatement. The Z5 looks like the various Sony flagships of the last two or
three years.
Minimalist Design:
All
glass, rear and front, is held together by a metal band with plastic corners,
which absorb the energy of a drop on the ground and help to ensure that the screen
does not break. The frosted glass supports both the look and feel, while the
phone calms down in the hand. The unit is waterproof, so entering the pond does
not matter much, but both the USB port and the headphone jack are free, so you
do not have to bother with annoying doors. The wireless store, which you think
would be perfect for such a thing, is disappointed. The 5.2-inch LCD screen is
great. Lively, colorful, bright and with good viewing angles. It's not quite as
exciting as some of Samsung's competing OLED screens or as perfect as a
higher-end LG 2K LCD screen, but most will be more than satisfied with the
screen.
The
phone is slightly thicker at 7.3 mm than high-end competitors from Apple and
Samsung, but can easily be stuck or held in a bag, especially compared to
larger Phablets with screens over 5.5 inches. The front speakers are suitable
for small telephone speakers and make it easy to watch videos in stereo without
blocking the speaker with your hands.
The
XPERIA Z5 includes the Snapdragon 810 from Qualcomm, which was responsible for
overheating issues not only on the Sony Z3 + but also on other Android flagship
devices. The Z5 gets warm, but not enough to cause testing problems. When
downloading music for offline playback, it was the warmest, not in a
graphically intense game. The phone does not seem to slow down when it gets
hot, and while it's not the fastest smartphone available - that would be the
Samsung Galaxy S6 - the XPERIA Z5 cuts a fine figure. It does not quite have
the same zipper as other top-of-the-line Android smartphones.
I
found the battery life a bit disappointing. Without using any of Sony's battery
saver modes, the XPERIA Z5 lasted on average only 34 hours and 30 minutes
between charges. He used it as the primary device with hundreds of push emails,
three hours of browsing and two hours of music listening via Bluetooth headset
per day. Compared to the daily battery of most smartphones are over 34 hours
good, but it is far from the up to two days lasting battery, claims Sony. In
production models, the possible battery life can improve, Sony's Stamina mode,
which provides a whitelist of apps and disables others when the screen is off,
works well and brings the battery life in my tests to 48 hours.
