The
XPERIA Z2 tablet from Sony is a major update for its first true iPad
challenger, the XPERIA Tablet Z. It's now sleeker, lighter, and much faster.
Sony has a true Android competitor for the iPad Air. While most Android tablet
makers are banking on the smaller, about 7 inch tablets like Google Nexus 7,
which are cheaper and do not want to compete directly with Apple's larger iPad,
Sony aims with its new tablet computer on the premium end.
It's
a hen-and-egg scenario. There are not many good full size Android tablets. So
there is not a wealth of optimized apps that make consumers buy full-size
tablets.
Super slim and light as a feather:
Sony
has clearly used the Omni-balance design principle for the XPERIA Z2 Tablet,
which mimics the design of the company's latest smartphones. But the back of
the tablet is not a glass. Instead, it is covered with a textured soft-touch
plastic that provides good grip. It makes the tablet easy to hold, which is
certainly helpful with its slimline 6.4mm and 426g frame. Although the Z2
Tablet is lightweight, it is solidly built and bends minimally in the body. The
rest of the tablet is essentially a glass plate with metal edges. It's simple
and unobtrusive and at least similar to Sony's premium television line - and
that's not a bad thing.
All
Sony high-end smartphones and tablets have been waterproof for a number of
years. Such is the XPERIA Z2 Tablet. Its IP58 protection rating means that it
can withstand immersion in 1.5m for up to 30 minutes, rather than diving just
1m below its predecessor. The seal brings with it some design compromises.
While the headphone jack is open (and impractically positioned at the bottom of
the tablet), the micro-USB charging port and micro-SD slots are protected by
rubber-tight doors.
The
XPERIA Z2 tablet has a large, bright and bright 10.1-inch high-definition
screen with excellent viewing angles. The screen has a lower resolution than
that of the iPad Air (1920 x 1200 pixels V 2048 x 1536, 224 ppi and 264 ppi),
although the difference in general use cannot be seen. The front speakers are
very directional, clear and pretty loud. Not surprisingly, they lack the bass.
They cling to the screen and enjoy sharing videos with others. If you mount
them on the front, this is a real difference. However, they are not a patch for
the HTC BoomSound speakers found on the HTC One M8.
Powerful and it vibrates:
The
Sony XPERIA Z2 tablet uses the same chip from Qualcomm (the Snapdragon 801) as
its smaller brother XPERIA Z2 as well as the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the HTC One
M8. It's just as fast as the current flagship smartphones. That means the Z2
tablet is powerful, fast and instantaneous. Graphically intensive games run
smoothly on the big screen, and apps start almost immediately. It is also
relatively easy for the battery, which is important because Sony has
significantly less weight here.
The
battery capacity is 6,000 milliamps (mAh), compared to 8,827 mAh for the iPad
Air and 8,220 for Samsung's 10.1-inch tablets. But when I went beyond the
numbers, I found that the XPERIA Z2 with continuous use (constant push email, a
few hours of surfing, maybe an hour of video) took a good day (about 15 hours)
without the power supply to enable sparse modes. Sony's energy-efficient
"Stamina" modes are also well-suited for extending standby times,
leaving at least four days of standby for my tests.
