If
you are looking for a reason to buy the Sony XPERIA XA1, it should be the
camera. While the rest of the phone is so, the camera is by far the most
outstanding feature. With the expertise that Sony has built up over the years
in imaging, you would expect nothing else. According to Bloomberg, the company
controls about half of the world market for image sensors. They appear in all
areas, from Sony with its own cameras and smartphones to a number of competing
devices. So the camera should be a selling point.
As
for the smartphone, the XA1 is standard. Although its 5-inch screen appears
large, this size is quite common these days. The XA1 now fits under the
description of "compact"; if you had said that a few years ago,
people would have thought you had lost your senses. However, in a smartphone
market with displays that regularly exceed 5.3 inches, the XA1 does not feel
too big. Part of this is the slimmed-down front panel of the phone, which
offers more screen breadth than you expect.
Besides,
the XA1 looks like you expect a Sony phone. There is little that distinguishes
this device from its predecessor (and probably its successor, the recently
announced XA1 Plus), but we reserve that as long as the phone is not on the desk.
However, this is a problem for the entire industry, and focusing on a flashy
design does not always make it the most usable smartphone. Do you remember
Nokia and its circular keyboards, lipstick-sized cell phones and the like? The
XA1 looks like many other Sony phones, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
It is functional and does the job. Sony has not gone everything here. The sides
are made of metal with plastic back. This is reflected in the price and in
fairness it is unlikely that you notice this plastic too often. Back to this
camera, however, the lens is protected by a metal ring so your photos will
remain spotless with scratches on the lens. There is a built-in 23 megapixel
sensor with a 2.0 aperture. This is not the widest, but the photos are still
impressive.
Save pictures:
An
initial problem with saving pictures from the camera turned out to be a damaged
memory card. The XA1 accepts up to 256 GB of micro SD card, which together with
the 32 GB internal memory results in many photos and videos. If you buy this
phone, you probably will not have a 256GB card, but it's nice to have that
option. If you want to use this phone as a camera, the dedicated camera key is
a bonus. It may take some time for the camera to get ready when you run out of
cold, which is a bit frustrating.
The
front camera has a resolution of 16 megapixels, which means that your selfies -
at least in theory - have a better resolution than the back cameras of some
phones. Apart from the case comes the lower price of the XA1 thanks to some
omissions. There is no fingerprint reader that has become standard on high-end
phones. There is also no optical image stabilization. The display also has a
slightly lower resolution, with the XA1 opting for 720 instead of 1080. It's
not as sharp as some competitors, but if you do not compare side-by-side, you
probably do not notice too much. For example, the text is less sharp, but it is
still a long way from the low-resolution smartphones used in sports.
