We
knew that someday someone would put a 4K display into a smartphone, but it was
still a surprise when Sony introduced the new Z5 Premium at IFA. Since Apple
has coined the name of the retina for its displays, there is some discussion
about how sharp a screen really needs to be. What is the limit of the human
eye? Is it useless to move the pixel density beyond a certain point? It's hard
to say for sure, because the clarity of a picture has a lot to do with the
distance you look at it from, and with smartphones we all like to get up close.
Specs
aside, what does it look like? It's strikingly perfect, but it's not
immediately obvious that it's a 4K display. Only up close can you get an idea
of how sharp this screen is. You can put it as close to your eyeballs as you
want and you will not be able to detect any hint of pixilation. But look at it
with a 1080p display side by side, and the difference is strong: the colors are
lush, the detail is impressive, and you get a deeper sense of depth.
The
XPERIA Z5 Premium is the actual flagship of Sony and therefore possibly differs
by the mirrored back of the regular XPERIA Z5 and Z5 Compact. You can get the
Z5 Premium in black, chrome or gold, and you'll find that mirror effect on each
one. It's an expensive look and it's classic, but it's obvious that dirty
fingerprints are inevitable. If you want your Z5 Premium to retain that
seductive look, you'll want to carry a microfiber cloth with you. In terms of
size, this display is 5.5 inches tall, but it does not feel much bigger than in
previous XPERIA Z releases, as the face is more off the screen and the
apertures have become smaller. At 180 g, it's also pretty light, and it's nice
to hold and put in your pocket.
Fingerprint Sensor and Snappy Shooter:
Next
to the 4K screen, there are two features that Sony emphasizes in the soffit:
the fingerprint sensor, which is also the on / off button on the right edge of
the phone, and the 23 megapixel camera, which will be the fastest camera in one
should smartphone, which can focus and snap in fractions of a second. The
fingerprint sensor is absolutely great. This is a very quick way to unlock your
phone, and you can do it easily with one hand, which is not always the case
with the Touch ID or the Samsung Home button. The camera is a little harder to
test, but it's definitely fast, responsive, and seems to take high-quality
photos. Although the large sensor is designed for 23 megapixels, it is reduced
to 8 megapixels. This allows you to enlarge photos without losing all details.
Hot stuff:
Heat
and battery life are obvious issues for the Z5 Premium. A 4K display requires a
lot of processing power and juice to keep it running. The phone includes a
64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor with 3GB of RAM under the hood. In the
early versions of the 810, there were problems with overheating, and Sony had
problems with earlier XPERIA Z phones, especially with 4K recording. I found
the Z5 Premium did not go very hot when I used it. Recording video has
definitely raised the temperature, but it has never reached unpleasant levels.
Sony
has used a hefty 3,430 mAh battery in the Z5 Premium. When I got on the power
management side and had a look at the battery usage, I could see that the demo
model was running flat all day and a few hours in the morning yesterday and was
21 percent in the tank. Maybe a few days between charges, even with the 4K
display, is not a dream.
