Sony's
Z3 Tablet Compact is a well-made, thin and lightweight device with an
impressive display, lively performance and rugged battery life. Still, it's
hard to recommend at this price ($ 445 and more) if there are other thin and
lightweight flagship tablets that cost less. Many of them offer higher
resolution screens and more powerful cameras. Sony has experimented with
bizarre devices in the past, but today it tends to be a straightforward
no-nonsense approach. Similar to the other members of the Z3 series, the Tablet
Compact has a deliberate square profile, which is only softened by a slight
rounding of the corners and sides. Some may call it boring or boring, but I
think it's stylish. Where other manufacturers use vivid colors, conflicting
textures, and a bit of imagination to attract shoppers, Sony prefers a
dustproof and waterproof IP65 / 68 protection and stainless steel corner
protector for extra durability.
That
does not mean that it is completely lacking design accents. Sony's
characteristic aluminum power button is in presence, and a purely ornamental
dark gray rim (silver in the white version) around the circumference of the
device serves to break up the rubbery plastic and the tempered glass that
dominates the front and back, respectively. On the edges, you'll find a volume
rocker next to the power key, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Sony's magnetic docking
port and a few sealed cubbyholes: one for the micro USB port and another for
protection Micro-SD and Nano SIM slots (the latter of course only available on
the LTE model).
Aligning
the two silver Sony logos on both sides of the tablet suggests that it should
be used in portrait orientation. This becomes even clearer when you consider
the high central position of the main camera on the back of the unit, as you
must be careful not to block the lens when shooting in landscape orientation.
Existing Z series slates, except for the curious "tablet edition" of
the XPERIA Z Ultra, had an almost symmetrical screen frame. However, with this
new 8-inch effort, the left and right frames are so narrow that I can hold the
tablet with just one hand. While this may sound comfortable, it is actually
more uncomfortable than it should be to use it this way.
The
power button and the volume rocker are located centrally on the right edge of
the tablet. Directly opposite is the unusable, proprietary, magnetic docking
connector from Sony. When I grasp the slate with one hand, these features are
just the right place to rub and scratch my skin. Apart from this design, using
the tablet is a pleasure, especially since it is only 6.4mm thick and weighs
270g (9.5oz). This is even slimmer and lighter than the latest iPad mini, which
offers 0.25 inches (7.5 mm) and 11.7 ounces (331 g). The Z3 Compact is
perfectly balanced and light enough to hang easily between the paws for a long
time without fatigue. In fact, it's the only tablet I've used without me
wishing for a case to push it out of the box.
The
XPERIA Z3 Tablet Compact is equipped with an 8-inch (1,920 x 1,200 IPS) LCD
display (283 ppi). In simpler terms, this means that it offers a full HD
(1080p) screen with few pixels for the standard Android navigation buttons. As
with Sony, the tablets feature several of the company's display technologies,
including Triluminos and X-Reality for richer colors and sharper images. If you
forget the hallmarks, the panel is just great. Colors are alive; White is
accurate; and blacks are basically as good as they can be for an LCD screen.
The viewing angles are excellent, and the panel can also claim excellent
sunlight readability. On a beautiful day, there is still some glare from the
glass, but the screen burns bright enough to be well visible even in strong,
direct sunlight.
