Samsung mobile phones have randomly
sent photos to people in the users' contact list without permission.
Mobile phone users Galaxy S9, S9 +
and Note 8 have filed complaints with Reddit and Samsung's official support
boards. They claim Samsung Messages, the standard SMS app for Galaxy devices,
has "silently sent photos to random contacts," says The Guardian. The
app "shows no signs of sending the photos, which means that the user does
not know the picture messages at all," adds the newspaper.
It's not clear how many devices are
affected by the problem, but "If it's a mistake, it would be a serious
privacy breach," says The Washington Post. Samsung has released a
statement stating that the company "knows the reports" and that the
technical teams are "testing this." Affected users should contact
Samsung directly before publishing a fix. The Guardian suggests that users can
switch to another SMS app, such as Google Android messages, or disable access
to the phone memory for the Samsung Messaging app. Users can disable Samsung's
message permissions by going to Settings -> Apps -> Samsung Messages
-> Permissions -> Storage.
In a bug with multiple Samsung
smartphone models, private photos were secretly sent to contacts stored on the
devices. Owners report. The problem affects newer phones, including the Samsung
Galaxy Note 8 and the Galaxy S9. The problem seems to be due to the standard
Samsung Messages messaging app. Some users have reported that individual
pictures or even entire picture galleries were mistakenly sent to any contacts
via SMS.
Samsung is aware of the problem and
said it has examined the reports that have appeared in Reddit and official
Samsung customer forums. "Samsung has been thoroughly investigating this
matter in the last few days. However, no hardware or software issues were found
relevant to this particular case, "Samsung said in a statement. We know
the reports on this topic and our technical teams are checking this out. Affected
customers are encouraged to contact us directly. "
