The Samsung Galaxy S3 is one of the
best Android phones on the market and surpasses most of its competitors with
its quad-core processor technology, a bright and vibrant display and the best
camera ever seen on any Samsung smartphone.
Samsung's flagship handset, the
Galaxy S3, is dealing with a horde of other Android phones, and it may soon be
dealing with a long-rumored new iPhone. Does it have what it takes to keep the
mobile crown? The S3 was unveiled at a crowded Earl's Court event in May and
since then, the hype surrounding the S3 has just grown. Pre-order records were
destroyed for both Vodafone and Car Phone Warehouse. After finally getting our
hands on the device for a longer time, we were able to try out all the new
features. We have to admit that the massive hype was worth it. The S3 comes
close to smartphone perfection.
Design and Build:
The Galaxy S3 features one of the
largest screens on an Android phone with a massive 4.8-inch 1280x720 HD Super
Amoled display. Outside the Galaxy Note and the Dell Streak, not many
smartphones have a larger display.
Despite the large screen, the S3
chassis is not as big as you would expect. The device measures 137x71x8.6 mm.
The HTC One X's current largest Android competitor, the HTC One X, measures a
similar 134x70x8.9mm, although it has a slightly smaller 4.7-inch display. When
it comes to weight, the S3 is light at 133g. This is largely due to the fact
that the S3 mainly consists of polycarbonate, unlike metal. The use of
polycarbonate made us worried about the durability of the S3. The device is
surrounded by a similar metal ring as the iPhone 4S, but this is not a unibody
design, and the removable back panel feels really weak. The fragile feel and
glossy front did not convince us that the unit would survive accidental
dropping or knocking unscathed.
With respect to the inputs, the S3
has three external physical buttons, with a rectangular home button positioned
on the face flanked by back and menu capacitive buttons. The volume control of
the device is located on the upper left side of the S3, with the power switch
on the top right. In terms of inputs, the S3 has headphones, micro USB and
micro SD ports and takes a micro SIM card from the mobile network. Unlike the
threadbare case, the buttons and inputs of the S3 feel robust. The volume and
power buttons on the device are in a clean metal frame.
Apart from its increased storage
capacity, the 64GB Samsung Galaxy S3 does not provide any extra bells and
whistles compared to its 16GB and 32GB siblings. The Samsung Galaxy S3 has room
for a 1.4 GHz quad-core processor and has 1 GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel camera
with 1080p Full HD video recording capability. While a second 1.9-megapixel
camera is in the front of the phone, the 8.6-mm Samsung Galaxy S3 offers enough
space for a 4.8-inch display with 1280 x 720p. With the Google Android 4.0 Ice
Cream Sandwich operating system, the Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
update is now available.
