The Samsung Galaxy S7 was also a
strong flagship of the Korean manufacturer. Even now, the Galaxy S8 has hit the
market, and the Samsung Galaxy S9 is expected to hit the market in late
February. Considering the newer models, the Samsung Galaxy S7 can still exist
as a leading Android smartphone, even though it is now nearly two years old?
Design:
The S7 looks very similar to the S6,
with its glass-framed case, framed by metal, far from the super-slim Samsung
Galaxy S8 and the subdued Samsung Galaxy S9, whose squared, curved screens line
the front of the gadget. That does not mean it's unattractive, but like the
iPhone 8, this is the last example of old-fashioned smartphone design. The
Samsung Galaxy S7 is available in different colors - the black color of our
test device had an attractive nacreous gloss that sets it apart from other
smartphones. Despite the use of glass, it did not feel smooth. Slight scratches
accumulated on the screen and the fingerprint reader, but these were only
visible if we watched for it under the right lighting conditions. Small
scratches on the fingerprint reader were more noticeable.
Samsung has upgraded the glass of its
Galaxy S8 to Gorens Glass 5 from Corning's fourth generation, which increases
the likelihood of breakage when dropped from a height. It is likely that the
Samsung Galaxy S9 also contains the same version, which makes both more robust
than the Samsung Galaxy S7. While the screen of the S7 is completely flat,
unlike its gently sloping counterpart S7 Edge, the back of the phone is bent at
the edges. It's very similar to the curved back of the Galaxy Note 5, and while
we were skeptical at first, we came to appreciate this subtle design touch. It
just reduced the size of this 5.1-inch phone to make it easier to hold and use
one-handed devices than other similarly-sized phones. While the S7 lacks the
"infinity display" that makes the S8 and S9 so attractive, it remains
a great-looking phone. We prefer the striking curved display of the S7 Edge,
but the regular S7 is still very elegant and stylish.
Like the Sony Xperia Z5, but unlike
the S6 and many other Android flagship phones, the S7 is waterproof. It is
designed for immersion in water with a depth of not less than 1.5 m for a
maximum of 30 minutes. It survived half an hour of pristine immersion in our
kitchen sink, so there should be no problems with rain, puddles or spilled
pints. Of course, it's best to make sure the flap-free connections are
completely dry before anything is connected.
Display:
There are no surprises when it comes
to the Super AMOLED screen of the S7. Thanks to the resolution of 2,560 x 1,440
QHD, the color accuracy and the contrast are perfect. In addition, the text is
crisp. Outdoors, the screen can temporarily increase the already high
brightness so that it is readable even in bright sunlight. The screen has an
"always-on" mode so that basic information such as the date, time and
battery charge can be displayed while you sleep. Nokia / Microsoft and Motorola
smartphones have been providing a similar function for years. It is nice to
have and has not significantly exhausted the battery life, but is hardly
necessary.
