The Sony XPERIA E Series is the company's XPERIA range
budget, serving more middle-class audiences than its other cell phones in the
barn. While you might say that this means it offers lower features, you might
consider it a cheaper, mid-function phone.
The presented at the IFA 2014 Sony XPERIA E3 is not the best
phone in the arsenal of Sony. So stop that if you think it will make the XPERIA
C3 or the much pricier and more impressive Sony XPERIA a candle Z3 Compact
cousin. It is a cell phone for the masses and should keep Sony among the top
three smartphone manufacturers.
At IFA 2014, the latest low-cost phone from Sony, the XPERIA
E3 with 4G function, was presented. We had a game and it looks like we're a
stylish, affordable LTE phone. While Sony spent most of its time at the IFA
2014 with the introduction of premium devices such as the XPERIA Z3 and the
XPERIA Z3 Tablet Compact, the other end of the smartphone market has not
forgotten. Say "hello" to the XPERIA E3.
The 4.5-inch Sony XPERIA E3 is a new, new entry-level device
and the most affordable 4G-LTE handset from Sony. 4G support is not the only
practical feature that Sony offers inside. A 5 megapixel camera features most
of Sony's key features, including the brand new AR Fun and Live on YouTube modes.
Unfortunately, there is no superior automatic mode, only an automatic scene
detection mode, but our test photos showed promise. Even in dimly lit
interiors, they were bright and sharp. You can record 1080p video with the rear
view camera, and there is a VGA front to turn on your Skype.
The 4.5-inch TFT screen was reminiscent of the XPERIA M2,
another of Sony's mid-range phones. It looks bright enough to counteract
disturbing glare effects, while the resolution of 854 × 480 gives a reasonable
218 pixels per inch. You cannot enjoy HD visuals just like competitors like the
Motorola Moto G 4G, but they are sharp enough for everyday use. Unfortunately,
the colors do not really burst on your eyeballs like high quality XPERIA
handsets. A 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor runs the show
with 1GB of RAM and seems to be well-behaved with Android 4.4 from our season.
We'll be sure to test games, multitasking and battery life as we get a final
trial.
The XPERIA
E3 has an attractive design that adheres to the Omni balance ethos of Sony and
fits perfectly with the rest of the XPERIA family. You get the same smooth
corners and rounded edges as the premium XPERIA X3 and also a selection of
bright colors (lime and copper are the two outstanding benefits). We also like
the size of the XPERIA E3. The 8.5mm frame fits well in the palm of our hand
and is comfortable enough to be used with one hand. At 144 g it will not burden
you either.
