While Sony
has released its low-priced phone successor to the XPERIA E3 with the XPERIA
E4, the second-generation Motorola Moto E 2 - or simply the new Moto E - was
officially unveiled as the official Moto E. The two handsets are a follow-up to
the solid budgetary efforts initiated last year, so that both represent a
certain amount of iterative, refined design.
We looked at
the technical data to see how the XPERIA E4 and the second-generation Moto E
are matched.
Sony XPERIA E4 vs Moto E 2 - Design:
Sony and
Motorola are two of the stronger designers in the Android smartphone business,
and that extends even to the corresponding low-end offerings. The Moto E 2
looks like it's very similar to last year's Moto E, which we described as
"a very simple-looking, non-eye-catching little phone that matters more
than being comfortable in the hand extremely thin "In our full report.
The Sony
XPERIA E4 has a little less similarity to last year's Sony XPERIA E3 - which is
not a bad thing given the phone's somewhat suppressive nature. The new device
has a more rounded plastic design, which reminds us more of the Lumia range of
Microsoft (formerly Nokia). Nevertheless, Sony inevitably makes its cheap
phones look solid. In the blurb for the E4, the company speaks of its "Omni
Balance Design", which should feel good in the hand by symmetry and
balance. There are even some first-class flourishes such as a diamond-cut
aluminum power button and a stainless steel camera ring. In the meantime, the
two cheap phones are almost identical, but the XPERIA E4 has the advantage that
it is just less than 2 mm.
Sony XPERIA vs E4 Moto E 2 screen:
Both phones
have relatively low tech displays, which corresponds to their lowest prices.
The pack has the same "qHD" resolution of 960 x 530 (not to be
confused with QHD), although the Moto E 2 will be sharper. This is because the
4.5-inch Moto E 2 displays is smaller, which means it packs its pixels closer
than the 5-inch Sony XPERIA E4. This is not very impressive, but the smaller
screen of the Moto E 2 seems to be better suited for this resolution.
Sony XPERIA E4 vs Moto E 2 -
Processor:
Not
surprisingly, none of the phones are near high-end components when it comes to
power. The Moto E 2 seems to be powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 410 CPU,
which is a big improvement over the original, while the Sony XPERIA E4 comes
with a MediaTek quad-core version. Neither is what you would call frantic, and
when it comes to everyday smartphone tasks, there's probably not much in it. We
would probably give the Moto E 2 and its Snapdragon an edge just because of
Qualcomm's larger pedigree and app support.
Sony XPERIA E4 vs Moto E 2 camera:
Sony has
always created decent camera phones. Finally, it provides the core imaging
technology for many modern phones, Android and others. Although the Sony XPERIA
E4 will not be a better performer for obvious reasons, it seems to have a small
edge over the Moto E 2. While both phones have a 5 megapixel reversing camera,
Sony offers the advantage of a flash at night. It also has a 2 megapixel front
camera for expert selfies, while the Moto E 2 has a pitiful VGA equivalent.
Sony XPERIA E4 vs Moto E 2 memory:
Everything
is square on the front of the memory; both phones have a modest 8 GB of
internal memory as standard. Luckily, both have micro-SD slots, so you can
extend that meager performance. And trust us If you want to install any number
of apps, videos or songs, you need to do that.
