The
Samsung Galaxy S5 can be defined in one word: evolution. The camera is designed
to deliver clearer, faster shots. The S5's fitness tracking capabilities are
enhanced over the Galaxy S4 by integrating a more powerful S Health app and a
dedicated heart rate monitor on the back. A fingerprint scanner makes the
safest Galaxy phone ever made even better.
However,
it is difficult to point out an outstanding feature that will grab potential
users the first time they use the Galaxy S5. And now it's been on the market
for a long time, and most places do not even have it in stock, thanks to the
fact that the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy S7 and now the Samsung Galaxy S8 take the
preference of Samsung's flagship. Both offer one much better experience and
design.
Design & Display:
The
standard plastic case from Samsung has changed a bit. The smooth, smooth
carrier now has a "gripper" surface. The S5 certainly offers less
metal than the iPhone 5S or the latest HTC One (M8), some of which enhance the
premium feel of a high-end smartphone. However, we are unconvinced and welcome
the relative lightness (although 15g heavier than the S4 at 145g) and the 8mm
thinness offered by the S5. That is, the thin back plate vibrates quite
alarmingly when the rather thin speaker is fully turned up.
The
S5, which is due to the Galaxy S4 Active, promises an IP67 seal. As long as the
cover on the micro USB 3.0 Power / Sync port is sealed, it will remain
submerged at a depth of 1 m for up to half an hour. The S5 tries to match the
security measures of the iPhone with fingerprint recognition. The system does
not seem to be as detailed as Apple's, and seems less inclined to detect the
pressure the first time around, but in general it seemed to work pretty well.
You can also authorize PayPal payments.
The
5.1-inch Super AMOLED screen is only a fraction larger than its predecessor,
but promises the same resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (432 ppi). It's
certainly an eye-catcher, with vivacious, some might say OTT colors, but no one
can deny it attracts attention for a reason.
Processor and connectivity:
As
you might expect, the S5 is fast. The 2.5GHz processor has 2GB of RAM and feels
extremely nimble in use. Our AnTuTu benchmark test yielded 34,811 points. He is
just behind our current world sharpener. There are 4G features as expected, but
you can also use Samsung's Download Booster to combine 4G and Wi-Fi for extra
fast downloads. There is also an IR blaster on the top, which is used in
conjunction with the Smart Remote app to control your TV and set-top box, as
well as to enter your TV highlights. It's a similar setup to the Sense TV App
on the HTC One (M8) and works just as well.
Software:
Samsung's
TouchWiz is the interface put on the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system, but
it seems to have been somewhat reduced on that occasion. Samsung has stopped
itself from piling up the bloated merchandise, but instead has the option to
download additional free apps from the Galaxy Gifts or Galaxy Essentials
stores. There are, however, a few items on board. Move the screen to the right
to get My Magazine, a media aggregator with a flip-board feature that
aggregates your favorite news and social media sources.
The
fitness app S Health has added a pedometer for pedometer, exercise and
nutrition. Place your finger on the sensor on the back near the camera flash
and you'll see your heart rate in seconds. There is also a graph showing how
the ticker works during the day.
Camera:
The
16 megapixel camera is a small jump up from the S4's 13 megapixels and offers a
range of modes, including panorama, dual camera (captures image and video
simultaneously with front and rear camera), Shot & More (Burst Mode) and
Virtual Tour (works together a clutch of pic as a video). You can also add more
Windows Phone-style items by downloading Animated Photo, Sound and Recording,
and a few more. The image quality is generally very good, with good color
balance, sharp resolution, and a ton of detail.
There
is a 2 megapixel camera on the front and the video is also impressive, and you
can increase the quality to UHD (4K video, 3,840 x 2,160 pixels). There is 16
GB of memory on the card, which is not bad, but you can extend this by another
128 GB using micro SD cards.
Battery:
There's
a big old 2,800 mAh battery hidden there, and that's a good thing, because
these high-end devices consume power when you let them go. To help, there's an
ultra-power-saving mode that reduces features (including the black-and-white
screen), and of course, the S5 is rare on current Hero devices because you may
need a spare battery when needed. But with so much fun on the stunning screen
and the various apps, it's tempting to leave it all. In that case you will be
worth a day, but you do not expect much more.
