The
Samsung Galaxy Note 5 has a long history. Although we started using it in the
early summer of 2015, Samsung still launched it in the UK. Instead, it gave us
the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+, leaving Note 5 for the US and Asian markets.
Almost a year later, despite rumors that the UK was released, Samsung Galaxy
Note 5 still refused to surface. This is a shame, because if you let me choose
between Note 5 and S6 Edge +, I will choose the former - mainly because of Note
5's super pressure sensitive stylus. There are no other similar smartphones on
the market today.
If you have the same idea, if you really need
it, you can get Note 5. You won't find it on any UK network contract, so you
need to buy a phone without a SIM card, but these days the price is quite
reasonable. I have seen the 32GB version at various outlets for just £410,
which is really tempting.
Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Samsung
Galaxy S6 Edge +: What's the difference?
Technically,
the Galaxy Note 5 is the same phone as its fabulous sibling S6 Edge +. It has
the same processor, RAM and memory options, the same screen size and screen
technology, and a similar complement of features. But the Samsung Galaxy Note 5
has a little more to offer, and it's all about the pressure-sensitive S Pen. As
with previous Note devices, it's a handy way to take screenshots, record ideas,
and comment on anything can be displayed on the screen.
This
time, Samsung has improved the docking mechanism of the S Pen. Push the pin in
and out until it clicks into place with a satisfying click. Put it back in and
snaps it back in safely. That's nice, but the pen itself is still
disappointingly light and plastic. The pen-driven software integrations have
also been polished up a bit. If you now move the pen across the screen and
click on the button on the barrel, the entire screen will be blurred and you
will see a series of abbreviations in the semicircle on the right side of the
screen.
It
looks so beautiful, once you pop it up you can do a lot with the stylus: you
can annotate the screen or capture a part of it, then share your image, or save
it; you can also launch Samsung from this shortcut menu The Action Memo Notes
app can also add three of your own shortcuts here.
Samsung Galaxy Note 5 - Design and
display:
Although
the Samsung Galaxy Note 5's 5.7-inch QHD (2,560 x 1,440) screen is not as
curved as the S6 Edge+, there is no balance in design. Its front and back are
adorned with sparkling tempting Gorilla Glass 4 to help it resist scratches and
breaks, and the edges are gently bent upwards from the back to match the
phone's sleek aluminum frame.
Basically,
note 5 looks like an S6 Edge + in reverse - and that's not a bad thing. I
prefer the way the Note 5 fits in the hand, and despite the pen slot, there's little
difference in size between the two phones. With a width of 76.1 mm, a height of
153 mm and a thickness of 7.6 mm, the grade 5 overall is only 0.2 cubic
millimeters larger. The only notable difference is that note 5 is 18g heavier.
And this display is - as with all smartphones from Galaxy - an absolute blast.
It is super sharp and achieves an amazing brightness in automatic mode, so it
is super readable in bright sunlight. If you select the base color profile in
the settings, it is also incredibly accurate in color.
