VAIO
has updated its popular 13-inch VAIO S notebook with the latest 4th generation
Intel Core i5 / i7 processor with four cores. In addition to the new CPU, the
system is enhanced with the company's new TruePerformance technology, which is
designed to maintain higher turbo frequency for longer periods of time. The new
VAIO S also features a fingerprint reader and a TPM 2.0 module to underline its
business features. At the same time, the VAIO S retained their
"classic" chassis and a number of connectors in 2018, so they do not
support modern connectors such as USB Type-C.
The
new VAIO S notebook is based on Intel's quad-core Core i5-8250U or Core
i7-8550U processor with Intel UHD Graphics 620, 8-16 GB LPDDR3-1866 memory and
a capacity of 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 PCIe SSD tuberculosis. One of the key
features of the VAIO S-2018 notebook is TruePerformance technology, which is
expected to maximize CPU time at high frequencies, giving VAIO a competitive
edge over other laptops with the same processor.
VAIO's
TruePerformance technology combines VAIO's increased CPU power limit with a
cooling system that can handle increased heat. For reference, Intel's Turbo
Boost 2.0 technology increases CPU frequency in 100 MHz increments when the
operating system requests higher performance states. Typically, the CPU will
operate at its maximum Turbo Boost 2.0 defined frequency for approximately 20
to 30 seconds (according to VAIO), and then it must reduce its clock due to
heat and other factors. VAIO claims that even if it increases the peak time of
the processor defined in TB 2.0 to 40 seconds, this will not bring many
benefits to the end user.
Instead,
VAIO engineers increased the basic TDP limits of Intel CPUs to extend the
chip's speed above the nominal frequency (or frequency), but below the peak
frequency defined by TB 2.0. The company did not say whether it would increase
the TDP of Intel's 8th generation Core i5 / i7 CPU from 15 W to 25 W (Intel
allows for an increase and is called configurable TDP-up), which explains and defines
higher frequencies. At the same time, VAIO acknowledged the need to redesign
its CPU VRM and cooling system to eliminate additional heat. The new cooler has
a thicker vent (probably an enlarged radiator) and a new fan speed control
algorithm to ensure the chip does not overheat.
This
year's VAIO S system is equipped with 802.11ac Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 4.1 module,
GbE connector, 0.92 MP webcam, SD card reader, fingerprint reader, TPM 2.0
module and so on. The original (non-Sony) VAIO S model I/O port configuration
introduced in 2016 remains unchanged: three USB 3.0 ports (including normally
open USB 3.0 for charging), TRRS audio connectors, HDMI and D-sub outputs. In
terms of battery life, the new model S can work for about 8 hours and 45
minutes on a single charge, depending on the model and application, consistent
with the previous generation VAIO S system, but compared to other products,
modern products are almost impressive.
For
displays and physical dimensions, the new VAIO S features a 13.3-inch screen
with a resolution of 1920×1080, weighs only 1 kg (2.34 lbs) and is only 15-17.8
mm thick. Compared to the 2016 VAIO S, the thinnest part of the chassis is
about 1.8 mm thick and the thickest part is about 0.2 mm thick, which is not a
big problem for portability.
