In a world where most smartphones are largely similar, the LG
G6 immediately stands out for its unique shape. In a market that mainly uses
16: 9 widescreen formats, a higher, narrower 18: 9 aspect ratio is a bold
departure - but it makes sense. You can enjoy the luxury of a large screen that
measures a diagonal of 5.7 inches wide on the diagonal without the cumbersome
width, making the big phone in your hand clumsy.
LG G6 - Price and
Competition:
The G6 costs around £ 650 and comes from online and high street
retailers. There are three color schemes, the traditional ventilation names:
you can choose between "Astro Black", "Mystic White" or the
model "Ice Platinum", which we have tried. All models are equipped
with 32 GB of internal memory. If you need more, the side slot uses a second
SIM card or micro SD card, so you can add up to 2TB of additional storage.
LG G6 - Design and
construction quality:
Thanks to its stylish metal frame and glass back cover, the
LG G6 looks and feels like a high-end phone. The latter uses Corning's Gorilla
Glass 5, which is well resistant to debris and scratches (although there are
fingerprints). The 5.7-inch front display features Gorilla Glass 3 and a tilted
interior. If you accidentally place your phone on the page, the effect will not
be transferred directly to the screen. According to LG, this should
significantly reduce the likelihood of damage. The G6 also survived by
accident: it passed IP68 certification, which means you can theoretically
immerse it in a depth of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes.
There are very few controls and connections. There is a USB
Type C port on the bottom for charging and data transfer, and a 3.5mm headphone
jack on the top. Like the previous LG phones, the power button (which can also
be used as a fingerprint reader) is located on the back of the phone, below the
camera.
LG G6 - Display:
Of course, the main attraction of the LG G6 is the unusually
shaped display. The picture is not ergonomic. It is easy to operate with one
hand and offers an extended viewing area that is great for surfing the internet
and playing games. However, this is not just the interesting size of this
display. The IPS panel supports HDR10, so you can enjoy Amazon Prime and
Netflix HDR videos with impressive visual dynamics, or at least as soon as the
required app updates are available.
It's also a great ad for everyday use. The maximum brightness
we measured was 492 cd / m² and the strange dark black was only 0.23 cd / m².
This means that the contrast of the IPS Phone Display is 2.139: 1. The only
disappointment is the color reproduction. The screen of the G6 covers 93.2% of
the sRGB color space. This is certainly not a bad score, but we've seen AMOLED
monitors perform better.
LG G6 - Software and
Performance:
The LG G6 runs on Android 7, but you cannot recognize it
because it overlaps with LG's UX 6 frontend. The most interesting feature is
the ability to divide the multitasking screen into two squares. That works: For
example, you can read information about restaurants in Chrome and find
directions on Google Maps. Or you cannot block the image library while taking a
new photo. Although we had no problems running two applications simultaneously,
the internal structure of the LG G6 is not particularly impressive. It uses the
same quad-core Snapdragon ARM 821 processor as the Google Pixel and Pixel XL
phones. The clock speed is 2.35 GHz, is supported by 4 GB of RAM and is only
one step away from the Snapdragon 820 of the G5.
This is reflected in the G6 benchmark score: in the Geekbench
4 single-core test he scored 1,777 points and the multicore score 4,137 points.
This is similar to Google Pixel and is slightly behind the Samsung Galaxy S7 of
the previous year. It is easily overtaken by Huawei P10, and once we have the
opportunity to test it properly, it will undoubtedly lose to the Galaxy S8.
This is similar to gaming performance, according to the GFXBench Manhattan
test. The G6 has significant graphics performance as it displays its off score
rating. However, the actual frame rate is one step for LG's competitors. This
is undoubtedly due to the need to control large, profiled screens. Even the
older G5 is a bit softer.
LG G6 - Battery Life:
The LG G6 has 3,300 mAh batteries. This may sound good, but
it keeps the phone quiet for 12 hours and 52 minutes during our battery test.
Google Pixel completed 16 hours and 23 minutes in the same test, while the
Galaxy S7 continued to run for 48 hours and 48 hours. The plus: Thanks to the
Snapdragon 821 architecture, the LG G6 supports Qualcomm's Fast Charge 3, which
can charge you up to 50% in 30 minutes. The box comes with a quick charger, USB
Type-C cable and headphones.
LG G6 - Camera:
One of my favorite old LG G5 features is the dual-lens
camera. This is reserved for the G6: a 125-degree wide-angle lens on the back
and a 71-degree field of view on the other standard lens. Like the LG G5, the
main camera has a large aperture of 1: 1.8 for low-light operation, while the
wide-angle lens is slightly narrower at 1: 2.4. Although the resolution has been
reduced from 16 million to 13 million pixels, the picture is clear and rich in
detail. The dual LED flash provides good natural light - it does not make the
scene blue or pink, as we see in the smartphone flash.
For enthusiasts there are manual photo and video modes. For
still images, you can set the focus, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and
exposure compensation. In manual mode, you can also adjust the microphone gain,
add a wind noise filter, and apply an exposure lock when you record a video.
Video can be recorded at 4K 16: 9 (30 fps) or Full HD (60 fps). At 720p, you
can shoot 120 frames per second at a 16: 9 aspect ratio or 60 frames per second
in a 18: 9 or 21: 9 movie format.
