Nowadays you often hear the emotions that most smartphones
look too similar to. But you will never mistake Sony's latest XPERIA XZ1 series
for other products on the market. Sony has prevailed in the XPERIA XZ product
line in 2016, avoiding modern design trends and features, and created an
unprecedented, flat flagship that minimizes gadgets.
Price and Availability:
The XPERIA XZ1 costs $ 699 and has only one configuration: 64
GB of memory and 4 GB of RAM.
Design - Time change:
While many new smartphones have chosen a wider, almost
dumbfounded screen, Sony XPERIA XZ1 ignores this shift with its eye-catching
rectangular shape and wide borders above and below the display. The result is a
phone similar to the smaller version of the XPERIA Z4 2015 tablet and several
generations of Sony flagship products.
The Venus Pink XPERIA XZ1 we tested measures 5.8 x 2.9 x 0.3
inches and is made of durable anodized aluminum with a water class of IP68. A
Gorilla Glass 5 protects the screen, but easily falls around the circumference
and picks up the curved edge of the device. On the right side of the phone,
you'll find an integrated power button, which is the flagship of Sony's
flagship. It's also a big rocker too short and small to help you identify
yourself. At least the top edge of the phone has a headphone jack, and those
days have disappeared from the flagship.
The XPERIA XZ1 is also available in the colors Moonlight
Blue, Warm Silver and Black. Interestingly, Sony sounded the glass on three
non-black models that matched the color of the aluminum. We hope to see more of
this from companies like Apple and Google because it gives the frontend of the
device a certain personality. The XZ1 is 0.2 inches wider than the Galaxy S8
(5.9 x 2.7 x 0.3 inches), so if your hand is small it's difficult to keep
comfortable. The screen of the S8 is larger than the XZ1, but the aspect ratio
is different, so it's thinner than the Sony phone.
Display:
The 5.2-inch 1080p LCD inside the XPERIA XZ1 may sound
unremarkable on paper, but for high-end phones, this is a very good panel. Do
not expect it to disappoint you like the OLED screens of some competitors. Sony
continues to work on LCDs in smartphones, which is a bit weird because ten
years ago it brought the world's first OLED TVs and continues to produce today.
The HDZ-enabled screen of the XZ1 is bright and clear, and like its
predecessors, you can adjust the display mode of this phone to get more or less
saturated sounds. But the XZ1 does not provide much contrast or perfect black,
making Galaxy Note 8 users as dazzled or as beautiful as the iPhone X.
The screen brightness peak of the XZ1 is 477 nits, while the
iPhone X is 574. The Sony mobile phone in its display mode covers 158% of the
sRGB color space and the delta E color accuracy is 0.36 (the closer the number
is) to the 0 the better). These are very satisfactory numbers, but there are
rumors that Sony will eventually enter the ranks of Apple, Samsung, LG and
Google, and put the OLED display on the flagship of 2018, the XZ1 screen still
feels best, old technology, not the direction of development of this industry.
Camera - Robust but not
Amazing:
While other handset manufacturers have started offering two
lenses for their devices, Sony has installed a camera on the back of the XPERIA
XZ1. It's a 19-megapixel sensor with f / 2.0 aperture and electronic image
stabilization, and there's no optical function here. For selfies, you can use a
13 MP front shooter. The camera app of the XPERIA XZ1 does not have many
shooting modes and features and is actually a relief after experiencing the
overly chaotic surface of the competitive flagship. We also appreciate that
Sony continues to provide dedicated shutdown hardware buttons for users who
prefer accurate and tactile feedback from physical buttons. However, some users
may regret that there are no portrait modes in many of the latest advanced
phones.
We set up our device with the 12 megapixel Galaxy S8 for
outdoor shooting, and we saw that the two phones performed well in different
ways. In the first shot, on a sunny but sunny afternoon, in a window-lit café,
the XZ1 had difficulty controlling the intense light that fell from the store
front. However, the phone processes the remaining images better than Samsung
devices, with dark exposure and grainy, blurry details. The white balance of
XPERIA is also more neutral.
Performance - The Fastest
for Android:
The XPERIA XZ1 uses Qualcomm's powerful Snapdragon 835
processor to compete with other existing Android flagships. When we used this
powerful chip to surf the Internet, stream videos, and play our favorite games,
the XZ1 showed no sign of delay. In the Geekbench 4 test of overall system
performance, the XZ1 reached an astounding 6,506, better than the Galaxy S8
(6,295), Google Pixel 2 (6,282), and XPERIA XZ Premium (6,206). While our
OnePlus review department scored 8GB of storage, the OnePlus 5T scored just
over 6,674 points. Very impressive, the XZ1 is the second in only half of the
memory. XPERIA's web browsing performance is not the fastest, with a score of
65.70 in our Jet Stream 1.1 JavaScript test. The Galaxy S8 (70.26) and XZ
Premium (70.04) scored faster, although the XZ1 performed slightly better than
the OnePlus 5T (62.08).
Battery - Longevity:
The XPERIA XZ1 uses a 2,700 mAh battery and supports Quick
Charge 3.0 from Qualcomm. This makes it ideal for users who do not want to wait
for a phone to repeat. The XPERIA battery also features Qnovo adaptive charging
technology that extends the life of the device (unlike Apple's iPhone) and
Smart Stamina, which disables unnecessary applications when the battery is not
more than 15%.
Even so, the phone lasted 9 hours and 45 minutes in Tom's
Guide's battery test, including continuous Internet access through T-Mobile's
LTE network. Although the display matches the average score of smartphones, it
is comparable to other flagship Android phones, such as Galaxy S8 (10:39),
Google Pixel 2 (11:07), and OnePlus 5T (11:22) Wear larger batteries. However,
XZ1's time has increased by 23 minutes (9:22) compared to its more expensive
XPERIA XZ Premium brother.
