The LG G7 THINQ is LG's current flagship, and the company
hopes it will stand out from other Android phones as it offers 'AI features'
including some features in Google Assistant and the Camera app. Overall, I was
impressed with the G7 THINQ as it offers a variety of cameras and display
capabilities.
The G7 THINQ is most commonly compared to the Samsung Galaxy
S9 +, which also features the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and the
latest version of Android 8.0 Oreo. Artificial intelligence features LG calls
it "THINQ" designed to differentiate it, but the difference is
subtle. The camera settings are somewhat unusual, but in keeping with the
previous mode of LG. It has two 16 megapixel rear view cameras - a standard
camera with optical image stabilization and aperture f / 1.6 and a wide-angle
camera f / 1.9 (you can switch cameras simply by pressing a button). With a
previous LG camera, like the G6, I like the way LG makes wide-angle shots. I
found it more suitable for landscape photography and for many people. I still
appreciate that on the G7.
LG said it uses "pixel grading" to convert four
pixels to one pixel, which increases the brightness of the photo by a factor of
four, and the company says the camera will automatically adjust to dim light.
I've found that low-light photography has improved compared to last year's
model, but all smartphone cameras have a long way to go before installing
larger cameras and sensors. When you open the Camera app for the first time,
you can take photos in standard (most of the time) mode or choose from three
additional options: AI Cam, Portrait, or Google Lens.
AI cam is designed to select the best camera mode for your
photos. This is an interesting idea and sometimes I find it useful. Often these
options are helpful, but occasionally the wrong option is chosen. It works well
for things like fireworks, and I find these pictures significantly better than
the default options on other phones. Google Footage analyzes the content of
your photos and identifies them.
This feature was first introduced on Google Pixel smartphones
and is a great idea. It is often used to identify logos and important
landmarks, but is still in progress. Ideally, you can refer to a variety of
specific products or buildings and get more information on the Internet. It
works well if it works. On the other hand, it thinks that Waldorf-Astoria is
not quite right as Rockefeller Center: when it sees the keyboard, it says
"looks like office supplies." For video you can compare it with LG
V30, for the cameraman. G7 actually has the same filters and controllers as
V30, but certain commands are hidden so they appear when AI calls them or
filters the menu. I'm not a big video artist, but the video I shot with G7
looks good.
Google Assistant:
The dedicated button on the left side
of the device pulls out Google Assistant, so you do not have to say "OK,
Google." I found that much more convenient than a smartphone on the
Samsung Galaxy S9 +, which was designed specifically for Samsung's own Bixby
assistant, which is not that comprehensive. Google Assistant is still the best
language assistant on the market, and I'm still impressed by how easy it is to
understand and answer most questions. LG has added a variety of custom device
tasks that allow Google Assistant apps to launch or change phone settings.
That's fine, but I have not used it that often. One thing to improve on Google
Assistant's performance is to update the far-field microphone, which LG claims
is 17 feet instead of just 6 feet.
Design and specifications:
Nowadays, the basic design is almost what I expect from every
mobile phone. It has a large display with a small bezel. Like most LG phones,
the fingerprint reader is located on the back of the phone (which is easier to
press than existing Samsung phones). The G7 measures 6.0 x 2.8 x 0.3 inches
(HWD) and weighs 5.7 ounces. It has a resolution of 6.1 inches and 2,880 x
1,440 pixels, slightly less than the Galaxy S9 + (with a 6.2-inch display). But
it's bigger than the Galaxy S9 with a 5.8-inch display. It's easier than anyone
else, but it still feels very strong. The G7 offers a variety of color options,
including matte and glossy surfaces; I tested a stylish blue model.
The phone has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of flash memory, with the
option to add more memory via an SD card. It feels as fast as any phone I use,
although the battery life is not as good as the big Galaxy S9 +, but I can
spend a whole day without any problems. The display is an IPS liquid crystal
display called "Super Bright" by LG. LG added a white pixel to the
traditional RGB portfolio, and the company says the phone's brightness is up to
1000 nits, making it brighter than its competitors' designs. Even in bright
sunlight, it appears to be consistent with the best OLED display for readability.
For the sound, the G7 has DTS-X and a 32-bit high-fidelity
QUAD-DAC, and LG says it has 39% more speakers than previous models with
powerful bass. I was impressed with the recent improvements on all new phone
speakers (considering their small size), but the G7 looks even louder. On the
other hand, I mainly listen to music on my phone through earphones. The G7 has
a 3.5mm audio jack.
