CHROMEBOOK was originally a cheap laptop with Google's free,
browser-based operating system software. But in the last year or so, Google has
added more software capabilities, while notebook manufacturers have produced
more high-end devices. Last year, Google's $ 1,000 PIXELBOOK set a high
standard and now other technology companies are following. Last week, I tested
the new CHROMEBOOK x2 from Hewlett Packard, which starts at $ 600, and there
are other new features missing in the high-end CHROME BOOK.
But let's start with the basics: HP CHROMEBOOK has a bright
12-inch high-resolution screen, a nice keyboard (though there is no backlight
under the keys), and a real Intel processor that offers a lot of power. It also
has two USB-C ports for charging or connecting external displays or other
peripherals. The entry-level version I've tried, however, has only 4GB of RAM
and 32GB of memory, a relatively insignificant amount (though comparable to
competitors in the price range of Samsung's $ 600 CHROMEBOOK Pro). You can add
memory from the micro SD memory card slot to x2, but many applications cannot
access this type of removable storage.
The unit is also an exterior; with an aluminum body that
covers the back of the screen with a glossy white ceramic coating similar to
the PIXELBOOK color way. There is also a large silver HP logo that matches the
overall look, but may offend users who do not like this obvious ad.
Tablet Mode:
What sets the x2 apart from the competition is a screen that
can be completely detached from the keyboard and used as a stand-alone tablet.
All major components, including the battery and the processor, are behind the
screen, so removing the keyboard does not slow the x2 down. The device's
keyboard connection weighs 3.1 pounds and does not weigh 1.6 pounds, which is
comparable to an iPad Pro with a 12-inch screen. In tablet mode, x2 works with
all sorts of tablet activities, such as: Watching a movie on Netflix or surfing
a website.
Unlike many (most) Windows laptops, which have a detachable
keyboard and can be used as a tablet, x2 does not require any changes to the
settings, even without having to press a button. To disconnect the screen from
the keyboard, all you have to do is tighten the screen (the screen and keyboard
can only be held together by magnets). The screen is touch-sensitive, so you
can easily browse most applications, and of course an on-screen keyboard that
pops up as you type. Reconnecting the screen is just as easy.
Like PIXELBOOK, x2 can also be used with a stylus for navigation,
notes or even drawing. Unlike PIXELBOOK and most other compatible stylus-based
computers, HP includes its pen, which runs on a single AAAA battery at no extra
cost. In contrast, the pen pen Google costs an additional $ 100. Buying a
device for two functions, laptops and tablets, can be a trick to save money.
Only the notebook's CHROME BOOK and iPad can cost more than $ 1,000. On the
other hand, Chrome and Android software in x2 tablet mode is not as crazy as
Apple iOS iPad for 8 years. If you run it from dusk to dawn as your primary
work and play device, the x2's 12 hours of battery life can be a problem.
Application:
The overall software’s situation is about the same as I saw
in PIXELBOOK last year. While some Android apps are partially or fully incompatible
with tablets and laptops, HP CHROMEBOOK can run all Chrome apps and most
Android apps. For example, my favorite text editor, IA Write, works well on x2
if it occupies the entire screen. But if you try to run it in a window, you can
only get a strange rectangle (telephonic) window that cannot be resized.
However, as I mentioned in the PIXELBOOK test, there are many great Android
apps that work well with CHROMEBOOK, including some apps from major software
vendors. I especially like the Microsoft version of Microsoft Word; you can use
x2 and other CHROMEBOOK and Adobe Light photo editing tools.
There are also front and rear cameras. Even at a resolution
of only 5 megapixels, the front camera is sufficient for video conferencing.
The 13 megapixel rear view camera works better, but the color and clarity of the
photos I took did not match the quality of my recent smartphone. In general, HP
(HPQ, -0.38%) CHROMEBOOK x2 is a good choice. Still, his clean tablet
capabilities may not be a unique feature. It is rumored that Google (GOOGL,
-0.57%) will launch several new devices next week, including a device
code-named Nocturne that mimics the removable x2 tablet. Depending on the leak,
it may have better specifications, but at a higher price.
