There is a creative user base that requires complete
packaging in a laptop: portability, power, pen and touch screen. HP's SPECTER
x360 15-inch is the latest notebook to meet these requirements. This is by no
means a budget laptop; for several years, the SPECTER series has used HP's
high-end products, which sold for $ 1,369 this year. The well-equipped unit I
checked was $ 1,719. Although the price is not cheap, it is still cheaper than
the famous competitors. The 15-inch MacBook Pro starts at $ 2,399.
SPECIFICATION:
DESIGN &
CONSTRUCTION:
The all-metal integrated design of SPECTER makes it rugged
and attractive, with copper edges and HP's new "Diamond-Cut" edge for
the back end of laptops. That's a nice aesthetic, but it will not change the
rules of the game in any way. Unfortunately, if you want to know that the
keyboard and palm rest are bent under pressure, then the SPECTER x360 will be
affected by both. SPECTER x360 15 also seems to have some quality control
issues. During my tests with the HP review unit, I heard a rattle on the left
fan when I was in clamshell mode. This problem persisted in tent and tablet
mode. To prove this, The Verge bought a retail model for comparison and it did
not produce the same sound in any mode of use. Our review sample is likely to
be defective, so shoppers should thoroughly review their devices at the time of
setup.
In addition, the bottom plate and the rubber feet do not
allow the notebook to remain completely on the table; if pressure is exerted on
the corner of the palm rest, the entire chassis is shaken slightly. This can be
seen in the two units evaluated by us. Although the weight on the paper is 4.71
lbs., it is troublesome to hold the SPECTER 15 with both hands due to the large
footprint. It can be used as a tablet due to a 360 degree hinge but is too
heavy and too heavy to use. On the port side, the photographer will be pleased
that the SPECTER x360 is equipped with a full size SD card slot. The remaining
available ports include a 3.5mm audio jack, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, an HDMI
output, a unique USB 3.1 port, and a power jack. This year's port side has
three notable additions: the SPECTER x360 15: power button, the Windows Hello
fingerprint sensor and the volume rocker on the left and right sides.
HP relies on creative photographers, multimedia editors,
artists, etc., who value the SPECTER x360 not just for its looks, but also for
the fact that it is equipped with a pressure-sensitive Windows Ink pen with AAA
battery. However, it is worth noting that nothing has changed in the last
generations of the SPECTER x360. If you scribble something in Windows Ink,
you'll notice that by default, there are no special features on the stylus
associated with the two buttons except Delete. Overall, it works much like a
surface pen, but the included pen is not as precise as a Wacom pen and tablet
combination, so anyone seriously chooses an external solution.
If you want something stronger, HP offers an optional tilt
pen for $ 89, which has the same compression level of 1024, but a tail eraser,
a USB-C charging function and the ability to draw at an angle. But it's still
not as powerful as a Wacom pen and tablet or even Microsoft's latest Surface
Pen.
SCREEN:
Let's talk about the screen. Yes, its true 4K (3,840 x 2,160
pixels) locks at 60 Hz, 340 nits of brightness, 282 pixels per inch, and lots
of vibrancy. This is a good display, but if you scale to full 4K resolution,
some Windows applications are still difficult or slightly inappropriate.
Compared to the big picture, however, his creativity is negligible, as the
disappointment is in fact due to the lack of 100% Adobe RGB color coverage.
Yes, the display is intended for creative advanced users who are likely to be
picky and likely to edit colors and do not support the full color gamut of the
Adobe Suite.
GRAPHICS:
When buyers choose the Core i7-8705G processor option, they
automatically purchase the AMD RX Vega M graphics chip, which outperforms the
standard NVidia GeForce MX150 in lower processors. This does not mean that the
SPECTER x360 suddenly becomes an old slot machine; however, it never skips a
beat and presents the entire Windows 10 environment in 4K. It can even play
League of Legends on medium settings with 60 frames and 4K resolution. However,
games with more powerful graphics like Counter Strike: Global Offensive and
Fortnite need to switch back to full HD resolution and lower detail settings to
get 60 frames per second. Please note that the game does not have QHD
(2,560x1440) resolution enabled for unknown reasons.
KEYBOARD:
After extensively using the keyboard and touchpad, the
SPECTER 15 lost its brilliance. The keys are flat but have some resistance
(though not as flat as the MacBook), even for my agile fingers, and usually
just a long time to type in less good experiences. The same applies to the
touchpad, which is tilted to the left to accommodate the main QWERTY layout.
It's weird in size, the pages are too wide, and the top and bottom are too
short.
SOFTWARE & SECURITY:
To make matters worse, HP continues to use the Synaptic
driver on its consumer computers, but instead reserves the Buttery Windows
Precision driver for its Elite books, which focus on the business. This will
lose you more smooth multi-touch gestures and interactions. In terms of login
security, this year's SPECTER x360 left a deep impression on me as you have two
ways to use Windows Hello: face recognition and fingerprint recognition. Seeing
one or the other on a high-end Windows laptop is the norm, but not both. They
all work well, though I find facial recognition more convenient and faster.
The strange location of the fingerprint sensor on the side of
the machine means you have to find it every time, and face registration
requires you to open the lid or look at the sensor when it's already open.
SPEAKER & AUDIO:
For the speakers, HP will continue its long-term audio
hardware and tuning partnership with Bang & Olufsen. It also comes with a
tuning app that sets the sliders for bass, treble and dialogue. Unfortunately,
the question of the maximum bass does not demand anything for the SPECTER x360
(in fact, it has already appeared). Audio is high and low, which is even worse
than the MacBook Pro 15 loudspeakers. At maximum volume, the SPECTER x360 can
fill a small space, but for any enthusiast, it will not be satisfactory.
BATTERY PERFORMANCE:
The charge for a quad-core processor, discrete graphics, and
4K screen is a 84 watt battery that's obvious. Run some Windows updates in the
background with the most powerful power plan and 70% brightness, so that the
battery is completely discharged in three hours. If you are more efficient with
the performance, set the brightness to 50% and choose "better
performance" as a false bottom, you can reach almost 6 hours while
charging. This is due to the power-hungry specifications, but if you want to
use the SPECTER x360 for an airplane or campus, you will need to carry a
charger (with a proprietary keg connection instead of one of the x360 USB-C
ports).
