Sony makes some important changes with its smartphone. But
the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are not the first Sony phones at CES in 2018; Sony
unveiled the XPERIA XA2 Ultra, a mid range device that unites Sony's new and old
design concepts.
But just because the phone does not have the new design style
of Sony does not mean that it has no advantages. We've found that it offers
consistent performance, good battery life and a powerful camera. However, these
features alone cannot be enough to cost $ 450. Let's take a closer look.
Design:
Sony has not changed its smartphone design in the last four
years. It finally happened on the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact, but the XA2 Ultra
basically met its old standard. This phone is very thick, heavy and has sharp
corners that are unattractive. Its 6-inch screen makes it a monster, especially
because it does not follow the modern "boundless trend" that we see
on other phones.
On the back of the XA2 Ultra you will find a camera and a
fingerprint sensor. That's right, there's a fingerprint sensor on this phone.
Why is it so amazing? Sony is notorious for turning off fingerprint sensors on
earlier devices in the US market alone. The company often says that this is due
to business decisions. We're happy to see it exists, but the sensor's placement
is a bit too high for our preferences, making it hard to achieve.
Unlike most smartphones on the market today, there is no
other technology than Androids Smart Lock that allows you to unlock your phone
with your face. But hey, we're happy how fingerprint sensors work. On the right
edge of the phone you will find the power switch and the volume rocker as well
as a special camera shutter. If you are not in the Camera app, you can press
the camera key to activate the camera so you can take a photo.
At the top there is a headphone jack that will not be visible
on the upcoming XZ2 and XZ2 Compact ships. Below are a USB Type C connector and
a tripod stand. However, the upper frame still has some interesting things.
Most modern smart phones offer dual-camera systems (sometimes even three) on
the back. Sony has changed the difference compared to the XA2 Ultra via a dual
camera on the front of the phone and even the flash. We will consider what it
means later.
Performance:
The XPERIA XA2 Ultra has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor
with 4GB of memory and features 32GB or 64GB of internal storage. XA2 Ultra has
no problems with everyday use. Although we are pushing through it through many
multiplayer and mobile games, there is almost no sign of slowing down the
phone. Asphalt 8 has grown only slightly here and there, and Meereshorn works
smoothly. Most people are happy with the performance of this phone.
Mediocre camera:
Like the camera on most budget phones, the XA2 Ultra requires
very good lighting to get the right picture. The 23 megapixel camera is
difficult to capture a lot of detail, the photos look flat, there is not much
depth, and the colors look a little rough. Generally, the photos do not look
clean, and the camera always fights with HDR: if the sky is too bright, the
front is too dark, and vice versa. To be honest, we are more impressed with a $
7 Honor 7X camera. In the lower light, the results are less than ideal. The
photos taken in the sun are dark and sub expressed. In general, we are far from
taking more photos in these environments. If you want to better manage the
camera for different light conditions, you can use professional mode.
Unlike some older Sony devices, the XA2 Ultra has no 960
frames per second (FPS) of ultra-slow motion. If you want to record slow
motion, the phone can handle 120 fps and it looks good. The video can be
captured at resolutions up to 4K, but when you turn it on, you receive a
warning that the temperature of the phone may be rising and the application may
be closing.
The most interesting feature of this phone is the front
camera, a 16-megapixel dual-sensor camera and an 8-megapixel wide-angle sensor.
You might think that the two sensors work together to create effects like the
portrait in self-portrait - they do not. Instead, the phone uses the main
camera for a standard selfie, but you can switch to another camera to get a
120-degree wide-angle lens for the group selfie. We hope these two presets can
be made more interesting, but the group self-timer mode is definitely useful
when you need it.
Software:
The XPERIA XA2 Ultra runs on Android 8.0 Oreo, but is
plastered with a Sony Android skin. It does not look as clean or minimal as
Android in stock, but there is certainly nothing wrong with it. What we do not
like though is the amount of bloatware pre installed on this phone. Not only
does it add to the confusion, it also takes up a lot of storage space. In the
32 GB available on our phone, thanks to all the bloated goods, we can only use
about 19 GB. For example, there is an included FM radio app that lets you
listen to the radio. If you're an avid PlayStation player, the PlayStation app
can be useful to you.
Battery life:
Maybe the best thing about this phone is the battery life.
The battery has a capacity of 3,580 mAh. Even if it is used relatively, we end
the whole day and the remaining battery capacity is at least 20%. We answered
the call from the charger at 9 and 19 o'clock. The phone still has about 41% of
its power. This is used extensively during the day, including surfing the
internet, listening to music, watching videos, and playing games. That's better
than some flagship phones, and it should not be a problem every day. The
battery also charges very fast thanks to Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 technology.
In our tests we were able to get 50% charge when charging for more than 35
minutes.
