The Sony XPERIA XZ2 Premium with the XPERIA XZ3 at the top of
the famous Japanese smartphone line, but later arrived in the UK. It has been
listed in the US since July and there are initial uncertainties regarding
further advertising. It's not hard to see the cause. This is a niche high-end
mobile phone for media consumption. The list of specifications is undoubtedly
impressive. In addition to the base product XPERIA XZ2 you get a precise 4K
display, 50% RAM and advanced dual-camera settings.
All in all, XZ2 Premium offers a powerful multimedia package
that is uncompromising. However, the trade-off between daily availability and
ease of comfort is considerable.
Sony XPERIA XZ2 Premium
- Design:
The first impression is important when you switch to a new
smartphone, but the effect is usually temporary. This is not the case with the
Sony XPERIA XZ2 Premium. They usually adapt to larger sizes of phones over time
and use, but the Sony XPERIA XZ2 Premium does not satisfy me. Every time I
absently picked it up from the table or put it in my pocket, I would wince.
The main problem with this phone is very simple: it's too
bulky, too wide and too heavy. To be more scientific, it has an average
thickness of 11.9 mm, a width of 80 mm and a weight of 236 g. Sony claims that
XZ2 Premium has a "natural shape". I think that's exactly because
it's reminiscent of big obsidian. Like the normal XZ2, Sony tried to soften
those brick sizes with a domed glass cover, which also helped with wireless
charging. In the succinct form of XZ2, it marks a significant step in Sony's most
recent utilitarian design. Here it can make a very heavy phone very slippery,
and it can easily fall if you lay it on a less level surface.
There are more design issues on the back. The location of the
dual-camera module on the device is undoubtedly helpful for photography, as
evidenced by the lack of "finger shots" while using XZ2 Premium. This
also forces the fingerprint sensor to fall into an unnatural center position
(which is flush with the on / off switch and is also unwieldy). Combined with
the fact that this biometric component is very similar to the camera module,
I've found that my fingers tend to start from the latter before they slide
down. You can imagine smudges. Based on the impressive camera references of the
camera, this clumsy positioning can nevertheless be justified. Besides the
potential contribution to the IP65 / 68 rating, it is more difficult to prove
that the lack of a headphone jack is very difficult. In addition, this size of
the device does not appear to be crazy about the location of the headphone
jack, especially considering its suitability. Speaking of which, Sony has
packed the XZ2 Premium with a range of stereo speakers (naturally in the
landscape), while also supporting LDAC and Hi-Res audio.
Sony XPERIA XZ2 Premium
- Display:
The screen of the Sony XPERIA XZ2 Premium is unusual for two
reasons. Above all, this 5.8-inch IPS LCD monitor is one of the few mobile
displays in 4K resolution. At 3840 x 2160 and 765 ppi, it's the pixel-intensive
display in all the big-hit hands. That means it's the only flagship product
that can natively render 4K video content in 2018.
That's impressive, but more is the technology or the way
behind it than the reality. When it comes to everyday navigation, web browsing,
even video viewing and intense games, the benefits of all these extra pixels
are hard to come by. Another special feature of this screen is its shape. We're
used to expanding the 18: 9 aspect ratio (or around) to the new standard, even
at the bottom end of the market. However, Sony has taken over the old-fashioned
16: 9 here. This makes the phone mention a wide range of feelings in the
previous section, with an aspect ratio of 18: 9, and a 5.8-inch screen can and
often feels embarrassing. The stricter 16: 9 standard is not the case.
Sony XPERIA XZ2 Premium
- Performance:
If you run a high-end Snapdragon 845 CPU with a sizable 6GB
of RAM, you can expect the Sony XPERIA XZ2 Premium to be fast, though the 4K
display is a cause for concern. The XZ2 Premium is a flying machine that can
handle my tasks with ease.
The general navigation and jumping between applications is
stopped, and a fingerprint sensor jumps to the main screen almost
instantaneously - this is the case if you can really try to put your finger on
it. Equally vivid is the use of the physical camera key (the feature we still
like) to jump directly to the camera app. In addition, all games I play on XZ2
Premium fly very fast. The high-profile Asphalt 9 is a great test for any
modern phone and runs perfectly on Sony. The Gun Gun is an expandable game for
all sorts of modern hardware, but it looks great in the forced 60fps mode. PUBG
also pushes its graphics settings very well up to the maximum 'Super' frame
rate and 'HDR' settings.
