The Samsung Notebook 9 is one of the light-weighted 15-inch
notebooks on the market. It has excellent battery life and fast charge and can
be charged via the USB Type-C connector. Add a discrete splash-proof backlit
keyboard and a smooth glass Windows Precision touchpad, a fingerprint reader
with Windows Hello support, and a handful of cool and helpful utilities and
settings. If you look after looks, this is uninteresting. The screen moves a
touch too freely. There is no touchscreen option, and although the graphics are
above standard, the overall performance is nothing special. It may look like a
simple laptop, but Samsung's lightweight 15-inch notebook 9 has several
features that allow it to stand out from its ultra-portable competition. Unlike
the LG, however, the notebook 9 has many other features that make it an
excellent choice for daily transport. Last but not least, it has an excellent
battery life of more than 12 hours - one of the longest we have tested.
However, it is like the LG that the design is a little uninspired.
The simple silver-on-silver case of the notebook 9 with
rounded corners says not only "look at me" but "which of
mine". And although the narrow bezels of the Full HD display allow for
more screens in a smaller case, they are also silver, which is not nearly as good
as the edge glass of models such as the HP Specter x360 from Dell XPS 15 or
even the Pro version of the notebook 9. To be honest, all have touchscreens.
The notebook 9 has a few configurations, but both have no touch screen.
However, if you are not interested in the somewhat bold design and the lack of
a touchscreen option, there is not much to like about this ultraportable one.
Even the price is fair for what you get: it costs $ 1,400 but is available for
about $ 100 less.
While the look of the laptop may not be too special, Samsung
has introduced a number of features that are sure to add to its appeal. For
example, the island style keyboard is pretty standard with just enough keyboard
space to make it comfortable. However, it is splash-proof and the buttons have
a soothing greenish backlight that automatically illuminates with three
brightness levels. There is also a fingerprint sensor in the lower right corner
of the keyboard to log in with Windows Hello. The glass touchpad is soft and
responsive without being nervous, but it's also a Windows Precision pad that
supports multi-touch gestures. Samsung also adds its own Press & Go feature
to the pad, allowing you to navigate the Explorer and the Edge browser with one
finger and no clicks.
Although the display with Full HD resolution does not provide
touch support, it is otherwise excellent. The colors are pleasant and the
brightness of 350 NIT can be increased to 500 nits with an outdoor mode. There
is also a video HDR mode that gives a bit of color and sharpness, as well as a
handful of task-related modes for reading and editing photos. Then you get
things like a USB-C port with Thunderbolt 3 support that lets you charge the
laptop, connect to a network via Ethernet and transfer data at up to 40 Gbps
and output to a 4K resolution monitor, You'll also find two USB 3.0-A ports
that support charging while the laptop is sleeping, a microSD card slot, a
headphone / microphone port, and a full-size HDMI output.
