Budget laptops usually do not leave a lasting impression, but
Samsung's new 13.3-inch notebook flash is not an ordinary budget device. From $
349, the laptop has a USB-C port, which is a rarity for a cheap Windows laptop.
Perhaps even more surprising is the fingerprint sensor, which is installed in
the deck of the notebook flash. This security feature is usually reserved for
mainstream or premium laptops. Samsung has also made no compromises with the
notebook flash display, including a 13.3-inch 1080p anti-glare screen.
The notebook Flash has an unconventional design that is
suitable for the target group: children and students. As expected, the flash is
plastic, but I like what Samsung did to make you forget that fact. The deck of
this charcoal-black laptop incorporates a woven textile pattern that gives the
chassis a stiff texture. The lid has, for better or worse, a funky pattern with
small black lines, as if it were crowned with birthday sprinkles. The look
reminds me a bit of stubble, but you can find a more comfortable connection.
The favorite area of Notebook Flash is the typewriter style
keyboard. (Google has done something similar with the removable keyboard of the
Pixel Slate.) The rounded keys of the notebook flash felt pleasant in my short
time with the device. The Flash is not the thinnest or lightest laptop you'll
find, but at 3 pounds and 0.67 inches, it's compact enough to slip into a
backpack and take lessons with you. The choice of ports is appropriate at this
price point: In addition to the Thunderbolt 3 port, the Flash has USB 3.0 and
USB 2.0 inputs, an HDMI port, a microSD card slot, and a headphone / microphone
port.
The Flash notebook offers decent components for the price,
but you should keep your expectations in check. The base model is equipped with
an Intel Celeron N4000 CPU, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of flash memory. For another
$ 50 you can upgrade the processor to an Intel Pentium Silver N5000 CPU.
Samsung estimates the battery life of the notebook at 10 hours, which is just
long enough to go through a school day. We'll find out if this number will last
if we ran a battery test in the course of the year.
The Samsung Notebook Flash should be a good laptop for
students and budget conscious consumers alike. With many features that are
unlikely to be found on laptops at this price, and an attractive design, we
have no flaws at first glance. The strange textured keyboard deck and the round
buttons may sound a bit different, but we are all looking for new technologies
when it comes to something else. Chromebooks have been ahead for a while when
it comes to cheap laptops. The Samsung Notebook Flash could be the laptop that
turns the page.
