The HTC One X no longer uses the familiar
aluminum-in-one design of the HTC phone, but uses a polycarbonate case similar
to the Nokia Lumia 800 to reduce weight. Although the back cover is matte, HTC
has polished the side, which gives the phone an unfinished look. Despite the
shiny edges, One X did not slip from our hands. In fact, the phone is very
comfortable to hold and use. All about the delightful curve, the One X has no
sharp edges to dig into your palm. Measuring just 0.35 inches, the One X is one
of the latest generations of ultra-thin Android phones on the market. Thanks to
the polycarbonate frame, the phone weighs only 4.7 ounces and the smaller HTC
Sensation XE is 0.74 ounces lighter.
The One X's large 4.7-inch 720p (1,280x720
pixels) display draws your attention, and the text on the high-resolution
screen looks sharp. HTC chose to use three touch-sensitive keys located at the
bottom of the screen instead of the on-screen software buttons. This should
give you more room to show, although I don't think it makes a big difference.
For comparison purposes only, the Galaxy Nexus uses a software key. The battery
cannot be removed, so there is no back cover. There is no micro SD card slot
yet. The One X comes with 32GB of onboard storage, which should be enough for
the average user. Multimedia enthusiasts may have to carefully manage their
media files to avoid running out of space.
At the top of the phone is the power button, the
3.5 mm audio jack and the location of the micro-SIM card slot. On the right is
the volume control host; on the left is the Micro-USB port. The rear camera has
an 8 megapixel back-illuminated (BSI) sensor and a lens with a maximum aperture
of f2.0. The front is a 1.3 megapixel camera located directly above the screen.
Next to are some speaker holes, not the metal grille on the old HTC model.
According to HTC, these holes are part of the polycarbonate chassis and are small
enough that the water droplets will not penetrate.
HTC's One-series devices are loaded with Google's
Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and the company's own Sense UI. HTC Sense is
currently in its fourth edition, using a low-key approach compared to the version
on Sensation XE. We have covered most of the new changes to this feature.
Frankly, I like the fine-tuning of ice cream sandwiches made by HTC. The
application switching panel is more sensible than the stock ICS (forgive the
pun). At the same time, HTC has improved the interface of the camera
application. Google's original camera UI is very basic, but the One X is
capable of shooting continuous shots and shooting still images while recording
video. It also adds a video recording button next to the shutter so you can
capture the video instantly without having to switch.
The HTC has optimized Beats Audio for almost all
music and video apps. The equalizer turns on when the phone plays tracks from
Internet radio or even YouTube video clips. Compared to the limited playback
capabilities of the Sensation XE, this is a huge improvement. Unfortunately,
the handset is not supplied with Beats headphones. If you want to enjoy the
full Beats audio experience, you need to raise more money. Nevertheless, I have
found that audio with activated equalizer, even with a normal headset a bit
more bass and clarity.
