Samsung's new 9-Spin notebook (priced at $ 1,199) offers the
durable, lightweight design that the company's ATV line is renowned for, adding
a pair of 360-degree hinges. When combined with an Intel Core i7 CPU, the
result is a machine with lean, medium productivity that can bend backwards to
get the job done. A flat keyboard and below-average battery life, however, are
major disadvantages of a really great laptop.
Design:
Welcome to the convertible party, Samsung! At first glance,
the spin resembles the previous laptops of the Samsung line Ativ. The sleek
notebook case is made of well-known black aluminum with a slightly raised
chrome emblem from Samsung and a metal-lined touchpad. However, the two
360-degree metal hinges show that the spin can be transformed, similar to the
Lenovo Yoga series and Toshiba's Radius line.
The Spin has four usage modes: Laptop, Tent, Tablet and
Stand. The gentle movement of the two hinges allows for quick transitions
between modes. For example, if the device is in tent mode (in the form of a
downward V), simply flip the display onto the bottom of the laptop to make a
tablet. If you fold the keyboard below as the base and leave the display open,
you have the stand mode. You can also lay the laptop flat for collaboration as
an unofficial mode. At 2.9 pounds and 12.4 x 8.7 x 0.59 inches, the spin is
slightly heavier than the HP Specter x360 13t (2.4 pounds, 12.8 x 8.6 x 0.6
inches) ), the Dell XPS 13 (2.7 lbs, 12 x 7.9 x 0.33-0.6) inches, and the
Lenovo Yoga 900 (2.8 lbs, 12.8 x 8.9 x 0.59 inches) Inch).
Ports:
With its sleek design, the Spin offers a good selection of
ports, including a pair of USB 3.0 ports to the right of a microSD card slot
and power button. (We'd prefer a full-size SD card slot, but it's better than
nothing, on the left side you'll find another USB 3.0 port, an HDMI port,
headset jacks, and the power adapter and volume rocker). I was surprised that
Samsung decided not to equip the convertible with the increasingly popular USB
Type-C connector. This does not mean fast loading or file transfer.
Display:
If you are in the market for a panel full of colors and
details, the Spider's Quad HD + (3200 x 1800) touch screen provides a solid
option. Looking at the 4K version of Tears of Steel, I examined the fine
connections and screws that hold the woman's mechanical hand together. From
there, my eyes were focused on the rich turquoise in the futuristic retro coat
of the woman as well as on the turquoise darts that adorn the sleeve top. It
was a nice contrast to the deep black that made the coat.
The colors on the spine's display practically jumped off the
screen. We measured its color rendering capability at an impressive 135 percent
(100 percent is the accepted minimum), well above the 86 percent average. The
Specter x360 was a distant second with 111 percent, and the XPS 13 was not far
behind with 104 percent. The Yoga 900S delivered a bleak 73 percent.
Keyboard and touchpad:
The backlit keyboard in the style of spins looks good, but
appearances are deceptive. With 1.2 millimeters of keyway, the slightly concave
buttons are a bit flat and stiff for my taste. At the 10FastFingers.com type
test, I've missed my average of 60 words per minute and only achieved 54 Wpm.
The chrome-plated touchpad measures 4 x 2.6 inches and has plenty of room to
change my digits when navigating documents and web pages. Multi-touch gestures
like two-finger scrolling and three-finger typing were quick and responsive.
