The Samsung Notebook 9 Pro aims in the middle in a good way.
Compared to other models we've tested recently, they feature a high-resolution
touch-screen display, a 360-degree hinge, a cool metal chassis and even a pen
holder. It has been carefully designed to offer something of everything and
some outstanding features: a discreet Radeon RX 540 GPU, an integrated S-Pen
with special Samsung applications, as well as Windows 10 ink compatibility and
impressively long battery life.
The Samsung Notebook 9 Pro is a good laptop that many people
like, including beginners. You'll see how we compare it to two other 15
"laptops with 360-degree hinges: The Lenovo Yoga 720 is very similar in
design and price, but the discrete Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 GPU makes it heavier,
hotter, and faster, The 15-inch HP Specter x360 is considered a class leader,
but you may be surprised how it developed in our tests compared to the Notebook
9 Pro.
Feature:
CPU: Intel Core i7-7500U. This is the 7th generation Kaby
Lake dual-core CPU with a base clock frequency of 2.7 GHz and a maximum clock
speed of 3.5 GHz. This is a pretty good chip, but as you've seen in our tests,
the performance difference between dual-core and quad-core CPUs is very large.
RAM: 16 GB of DDR4 RAM. There are still a few 8GB laptops,
but 16GB is the best choice.
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 540, this low-end stand-alone GPU does not
burn barn, but is enough for light games.
Display: 15-inch IPS LED touch screen with FHD (1920x1080),
720p webcam and face sensor for Windows Hello The maximum brightness of the
display is 344 nits (according to Samsung 350 NIT specifications). However, you
do not want to use it constantly, especially if you are using a rechargeable
battery, as a brighter display consumes more power.
Port: One USB 3.1 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) C-type, two USB 3.0 A types,
microSD. It is recommended that there is also a full HDMI port for connecting
an external monitor. The thinner laptops become, the harder it is to find this
convenient port.
In use - a well-balanced
Machine:
The Notebook 9 Pro has its quirks, but overall, it's a
thoughtful product. Sure, you do not get the charisma and drama of a flagship,
but pretty much everything works. The matte aluminum chassis with chrome-plated
Samsung logo is tasteful and robust. In both halves of the body, there is
hardly any flex and the 360-degree hinges feel crisp. We also appreciate the
lower weight - it does not feel heavy to carry. The keyboard structure is
slippery, but the slightly concave buttons keep your fingers where they should
be. The keys feel at a comfortable distance, none are in an odd position and
their journey feels comfortable. The trackpad is very large and responsive, and
the centered position is great - it's always confusing when it's moved to one
side.
More and more laptops offer pen support, but Samsung had a
head start with the S-Pen technology it already used on Android tablets and
phones. A huge advantage: The pen is in its own slot on the bottom of the
Notebook 9 Pro and not in a floppy disk or a loose Gansy magnetic connection.
You must find a safe place for the special tweezers to remove and install the
replacement tips that came with the laptop.
In addition to supporting Windows 10 ink-inking capabilities,
the S-Pen also has its own sticky notes, drawing and other productivity apps.
They are collectively referred to as "Active Command". They can be
easily summoned if you remove the pin from the slot or press the button near
the display. I've enjoyed all of them, especially how you can mix colors in the
drawing app digitally and how you can select video clips with the stylus to
create your own animated GIFs.
