Samsung has packaged a trio of new laptops at CES this week,
but the most intriguing is not the sleek, ultraportable Notebook 9 Pro or the
sophisticated Odyssey gaming rig, but the $ 349 Notebook Flash, a unique and
joyful laptop inspired by the Design of typewriters. The Flash notebook is an
aggressively experimental design by the Korean tech giants focused on sleek
silver laptops, even on the lower priced Chromebooks. Instead of silver
aluminum, the notebook Flash is covered with a robust hard plastic, which
Samsung calls "fun retro design".
Part of the uniqueness is the way the notebook feels to
Flash. I spent a few minutes with it during CES, and spent most of my time
getting to know its unique textile-embossed chassis and typewriter-style
keyboard. The lid looks like a donut with sprinkles spread over the lid in even
rows. The only silver part is the Samsung logo. Open the lid and you will
immediately see the textile pattern surrounding the keyboard and touchpad. It
feels long-lasting and soothing and vaguely reminiscent of the much higher
quality keyboard deck from Microsoft Surface Laptop. The keys of the Notebook
Flash are rounded like a typewriter and satisfactorily robust for such a cheap
laptop.
Speaking of cheap, the cost savings must come from somewhere,
so Samsung has stocked the Flash notebook with an Intel Celeron processor (a
slightly faster Pentium CPU is an extra 50 euros), 4GB of memory, and 64GB of
flash memory. These are specifications that are usually found on a Chromebook
and not on a Windows 10 computer. At least the screen is satisfactory: A
13.3-inch full-HD panel (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) offers bright colors and crisp
text.
A new pro and a new
odyssey:
The new Samsung Notebook 9 Pro is at the other end of the
notebook spectrum than the notebook Flash. Its silver aluminum finish looks and
feels first-rate, especially around the diamond ground edges. Designed for
creative professionals, the 2.84-pound Notebook 9 Pro comes with an Active Pen
Digital Pen that offers 4,000 pressure-sensitivity levels. The tapping and
drawing on the screen feels very natural and the hinge is strong enough to
prevent the screen from jumping too much.
The specifications for the Notebook 9 Pro include an Intel
Core i7-8550U CPU, 8GB of memory, and a 256GB SSD. Oddly enough, the option to
add an LTE modem is missing, even though it's available on several other
Samsung laptops. The Notebook 9 Pro will be released earlier this year. Prices
were not announced. At CES, Samsung also unveiled its latest notebook Odyssey
gaming notebook, featuring a brand new Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 GPU. The
15.6-inch Full HD display is compatible with Nvidia's G-Sync screen refresh
sync and includes 16GB of RAM and an Intel Core i7 CPU. Like the notebook 9
Pro, the notebook Odyssey will be launched earlier this year, but prices are
not yet available.
