Samsung first introduced the Galaxy Book 2-in-1 hybrid
notebook in February 2017, with 10.6-inch and 12-inch models. They use Intel
chips to run Windows 10 and come with an S Pen to provide a very lightweight
and flexible travel machine. Today, we got the second generation of Galaxy
Book2, which saw a conversion with Intel. Samsung added a Snapdragon 850 chip
and announced that its latest 2-in-1 hybrid laptop has 20 hours of battery
life. For less than $1,000, you can also get S Pen and keyboard/screen protector.
Galaxy Book2 is touted as "always on, always connected
PC." This is a fairly common claim heard in 2018, but Samsung decided to
implement it with ARM instead of Intel. Inside the Galaxy Book2, you'll find a
Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 quad-core chip running at 2.96GHz with 4GB of RAM and
128GB of storage. This combination provides a 12-inch sAMOLED FHD+ display for
Windows 10 S with a resolution of 2,160 x 1,440. Yes, the S Pen is still
contained in the box, and there is also a keyboard that doubles as a screen
cover. Other features include the Snapdragon X20 LTE modem, two USB Type-C
ports, a microSD card slot and a headphone jack. The two speakers built into
Book2 have been adjusted by AKG and support Dolby Atmos.
The combination of Qualcomm's chips and Windows 10 S enables
Samsung to have up to 20 hours of battery life. Of course, this will vary with
usage, but adaptive fast charging means that charging should not take a long
time and the battery is automatically protected from overcharging. It should be
very portable and weighs only 1.75 pounds and measures 11.32 times 7.89 by 0.3
inches. The price of the original Galaxy Book ranges from $630 to $1,300
depending on the model selected. The Galaxy Book2 will start at $999.99 and
will be available on November 2nd. It will initially be available directly from
AT&T, Microsoft and Samsung. AT&T, Sprint and Verizon are expected to
be available in stores by the end of November.
When PCMag used the original Galaxy Book, we found it to be a
very beautiful lightweight travel machine; its main advantage is its display.
We should expect more of the same content for Galaxy Book2, but the biggest
unknown this time is the experience of Windows 10 running on Qualcomm. Whether
you need a laptop or a tablet, the Galaxy Book2 is worth a look. The inclusion
of the S Pen and keyboard as standard features will definitely help it sell.
