The HTC Desire 626 is the nicest phone with an
exterior reminiscent of a sleek liquor-ice resort glazed with neon and navy
blue stripes. The mid-range handset returns to the iconic HTC designs, though
the design gets less and less. In use, it looks fantastic and is fantastic on
the go. Despite a sugar addictive exterior, the Desire 626 still does not
provide much needed energy boost under the hood. Starting from the face of the
Desire 626, the 5-inch screen feels somewhat claustrophobic despite its larger
size. It wastes a lot of space, especially due to unnecessary HTC branding
below the screen. The buttons on the screen also take up a lot of space on the
app canvas, making the screen much smaller than you would expect.
The display is still pretty impressive for the
price, with a crisp 720p resolution and a nice, bright look, though it does
occasionally feel like you're watching a letterbox movie. The automatic
brightness function of the phone is also somewhat unpredictable. The screen is
surrounded by a familiar HTC stereo speaker grill complemented by a
surprisingly robust 5 megapixel front camera. On the right side of the phone
are the on / off switch and a volume rocker. On the left side of the device are
SIM and Micro SD card slots, both hidden behind a plastic flap. Internally, the
phone has 16GB of memory.
There is a headphone jack on the top of the
handset and the bottom is the standard micro-USB port for charging. The 626
does not offer a quick charge option, which means that it's not the best mobile
phone on the go with average battery capacity. I often had problems getting
through the day, even with light use. The rear-facing 13-megapixel camera is
also a pity. The images range from compressed and overly sharp images to gloomy
images. The camera works well for Instagram and Snapchat, but even in this price
range it is disappointing. Which essentially means that the HTC Desire 626 is a
typical mid-range smartphone? It feels soft and firm, though it can creak in
your hands. The buttons are obviously cheap and they lack definition.
It is undeniable that the phone with 8.1 mm depth
and a weight of 139 grams is comfortable in the hand. However, the phone may
feel hollow when combined with poor performance. Under Android 5.1, the 626
features the HTC Sense UI, which is sluggish again, with primitive multitasking,
a complicated default splash screen setup, and a general lack of care? There is
a theme system, otherwise HTC adds little to the Android experience. This is
not supported by the mid-range limited mean of the phone. The performance
suffers constantly during use. YouTube can become stuttering when combined with
incoming notifications and high-definition video, while Chrome is often in
action, Even Twitter and Facebook felt slow, while music playback significantly
affected the overall speed.
