The HTC One M9 is fast and the Sense 7 interface is a big
improvement, but it's not enough to really make it stand out. The HTC One M9
was released in mid-2015 and had to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6
Edge; In 2018 there will be new competition from the likes of the Motorola Moto
G6, which cost £ 200 at the time of updating this review - coincidentally the
One M9.
So worth the One M9, or has the three-year-old smartphone
exceeded its expiration date? If you're looking for snappy performance, solid
build quality and a decent camera, the HTC is a fantastic choice. If you are
looking for a longer screen, a less stock Android product, and a quick charger?
You should rather buy the newer Moto G6.
In front of the HTC One M9 and HTC 10, the stunning One M8
sets the standard for HTC products. Since the release of the One M8, its
successors, including the One M9, have a similar design. That does not mean
that the One M9 is not a nice-looking cell phone, but it does not have the same
"wow factor" as some of HTC's earlier flagship phones, or even the
Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, the standout device. It also does not help that
the HTC One M9 has exactly the same display as the One M8. The One M9 increases
the resolution to 2,560 x 1,440 and has a 5-inch display with 1920 x 1,080
pixels. If you want an HTC phone with a high-end display, you have to opt for
the newer HTC 10.
HTC One M9 - Design and
build quality:
Staying the same is not necessarily a bad thing, as the small
improvements made by HTC on the One M9 immediately make the phone more
attractive than its predecessor. For example, it's much edged around the edges
now, and the pronounced lip on the side of the phone makes it easier to hold on
to - unlike the One M8, which felt like we were dropping it.
HTC has also added a touch of color to the frame of the
phone, which was inspired by luxury watches and fine jewelry. This is a similar
idea to the HTC Desire Eye, where an additional ribbon has been integrated
directly into the soft-touch case of the phone. Here, the same effect was
applied to the One M9, with only metal instead of plastic. This is a subtle
effect, but adds a touch of class to the handset, making it feel like a high
quality handset compared to its predecessor. Our review sample was a
retrievable silver and gold model, but it is also available in a darker
gunmetal gray with mirrored gray sidewalls and a gold version with mirrored
polished gold sidewalls.
Of course, none of these reasons are particularly compelling
reasons for an upgrade if you already own an M8, but for those who are in the
market for a new contract, the Samsung Galaxy S6 or Galaxy certainly has the
edge over S6 Edge. Although it is thicker and heavier than the Samsung Galaxy
S6, measuring 144 x 70 x 9.6 mm and 157 g compared to the 143 x 70 x 6.8 mm and
138 g S6, it is just as attractive.
