Can you hear that? It's the sound of a smartphone that
delivers premium audio - at least HTC wants you to believe in the latest
mid-range wonder, the HTC Desire 10 lifestyle. The phone arrives as one-half of
a double clock, with the higher-end Desire 10 Pro providing the bulk of the
spotlight, and thus a higher price, while the Desire 10 lifestyle seeks the
trendy, lower-cost way of finding subway fame.
Is the audio experience alone really enough to differentiate
yourself from the Desire 10 lifestyle? The lifestyle lacks a fingerprint
scanner, 1080p resolution, a flagship camera, laser autofocus, and a bi-color
flash - all the Desire 10 Pro has to offer. The Desire 10 lifestyle is not free
of features and with a lower price for its name; there is still a good chance
that it will claim a middle market claim. In the UK, the HTC Desire 10
lifestyle price for the 3GB / 32GB variant has been set at £ 249, which makes
it quite attractive. We are still waiting for the prices of the rest of the
world.
Design and Display:
The Desire 10 Lifestyle has a pleasing premium finish. The
soft-touch body made of polycarbonate is reinforced by a metal frame underneath
- while the metal is premium. It is the polycarbonate that has a warming
presence in your hand. The phone fits snugly against the palm for a comfortable
grip. This is useful as it is a fairly large 156.9 x 76.9 x 7.7mm mobile phone,
although at 155g it is not as heavy as you expect.
The Desire 10 Lifestyle is available in four colors: black,
dark blue, light blue and white. At the top is a 3.5mm headphone jack. At the
base of the handset are a micro-USB port and a bass speaker, which work
together with a standard speaker on top of the phone. This is the same
BoomSound Hi-Fi Edition speaker setting you'll find on the flagship HTC 10. The
screen is a 5.5-inch device with a resolution of 720p, although there is not
much difference between the lifestyle display and the lifestyle display on the
1080p Pro.
How is it to be used?
The HTC Desire 10 Lifestyle has a Snapdragon 400 processor, a
chip that's commonly found in entry-level devices, and we're a little
disappointed that the phone does not pack the mid-range 600 series. The
processor is paired with either 2GB or 3GB of RAM, depending on whether you
choose 16GB or 32GB of internal memory. If you have the choice, we recommend
the 3 GB / 32 GB version to improve performance and give more space for your
apps and games.
If you only get the 2 GB / 16 GB version of the Desire 10
Lifestyle, you can at least expand the memory because the phone has a Micro SD
slot that supports cards up to a whopping 2TB. Android Marshmallow ran smoothly
during our short time on the phone, although loading some apps took some time.
There was no final software on the handset we used. Therefore, things could get
better before it gets on the shelves. However, we fear that the phone will
struggle with high-intensity games.
