Announced in late 2015, the HTC One (A9) is designed to be
directly under HTC's M9 camera, offering some of the same or similar
specifications, but in a lower cost case. In the UK, HTC offers the HTC One
(A9) with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in memory. In the US, however, this is
possible with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of integrated memory. In both cases, it is
possible to expand the built-in memory with a Micro SD card.
At first glance, the HTC One (A9) could easily be confused
with an iPhone 6S because it has a very similar design. At the bottom of the
screen, where you would expect the home button of an iPhone, there is a
fingerprint scanner, with which you can unlock your phone. On the right side of
the phone is a rocker switch that allows you to adjust the volume. If you set
this up, you can take a photo instead of pressing the virtual shutter button on
the screen. There is also a lock button next to the volume rocker. You must be
careful not to press this button when you want to take a picture because the
screen turns off and you need to start over. However, the keys feel very
different, so it is likely that you can look for the right one.
Although the volume key can be used to trigger the shutter,
it is somewhat cumbersome. If you were to hold the phone the same as a standard
camera, it is very easy to cover the lens with your left hand. Instead, you
need to adjust your grip so that you use your left hand to make the shot,
rather than the right one as usual. The Unlock screen allows you to access the
phone's camera without having to fully unlock the phone. On the right side you
will see a camera icon. Just tap and drag your finger up to launch the camera
app.
Front of the HTC One
(A9):
To do this, tap the icon in the lower-right corner of the
screen, which will display as four dots. Here you can choose between Selfie
(the front camera), Camera (automatic use of the rear camera), Panorama (for
creating ultra-wide shots) and Pro (where you can find the manual controls, in
turn with the back) camera), Hyperlapse (for creating time-lapse videos) and
slow motion (for creating slow motion videos).
Once in Pro, you will find that there are a number of options
that you can change from the labels that are displayed on the screen. First,
you can turn on RAW recording by pressing the button labeled JPEG. You can only
return to JPEG by pressing the RAW button again. When you record in Raw, the
HTC One (A9) will record in both DNG raw DN and JPEG. At the bottom of the
screen you will see your manual controls. There are white balance, exposure,
ISO, shutter speed and manual focus. Tap one of these controls, and then use
the slider that appears on the screen to make a setting. You can also leave all
or some of them in Automatic by selecting the "A" icon at the top of
each slider. It's a shame not to see a shutter here - especially since you can
control almost everything else.
Camera mode:
There are a few other settings that can be changed via a
three-dot icon. These include the photo size and the self-timer. If you access
the General Settings option from this small menu, you will find that you can
turn on a grid to make composing easier, and you can choose to capture an image
using the volume key. The last option you can change in this mode is whether
the flash is on or off. There is only on or off, there is no red-eye reduction
mode or similar. To turn on, tap the lightning bolt icon in the upper left
corner of the screen.
If you choose camera mode (as opposed to Pro mode), you'll
find your options are more limited. For example, you cannot shoot in raw format
mode or make changes, such as white balance or shutter speed. However, you have
access to the automatic flash, in which the camera itself decides whether the
flash should be activated or not. In camera mode, you can also use automatic
smile recording, voice recording, and touch to take the picture if you want.
Recording a video can be done directly from camera mode, where it is not
available in Pro mode. Just below the camera (or still image) icon is a smaller
video icon. Just press this to record a video. Unlike other HTC One phones, the
(A9) cannot record 4K video.
