Samsung has introduced its new Galaxy A9 smartphone, which
offers the world's first quad camera. Here you will find everything you need to
know about this innovative device and when you can get one of them.
The four cameras:
The four-camera setup is a combination of a 24-MP primary
camera, an 8-MP-120-degree wide-angle lens, a 5-megapixel sensor camera that
collects data in Samsung's Live Focus Bokeh mode and a 10-megapixel telephoto
lens to allow 2-fold zooming the main camera. The phone uses the main camera
for shooting in automatic mode and is also suitable for low-light situations.
With the wide-angle lens, you can take a wider shot while the 5MP
depth-detection camera works with the main lens to create background blur in the
images. Around the front there is a 24 MP selfie camera for selfies and video
calls.
The main selling point of the Galaxy A9 is of course the
innovative camera configuration. Samsung has added four different types of
optics that give smartphone photographers an enviable frame. The main camera is
a 24 MP / 1.7 lenses, which, according to Samsung, is used by software to
auto-assemble 4 pixels when exposed to light. Hereby "come in" and
create brighter pictures. There is also a helpful error detection program that
analyzes footage and immediately notifies you when the focus is out of focus or
someone blinked while you were taking the picture. Next up is the 10 MP f / 2.4
ultra-wide cameras with a viewing angle of 120 degrees, which should be the
same as the human eye. This means that you can record a much larger area than
the standard 77-degree settings of most lenses. At the inaugural event, Samsung
unveiled some ultra-wide-camera panoramic shots that looked very impressive.
Design and build:
With a 6.3-inch Full HD + Super AMOLED display dominating the
front panel, the Galaxy A9 is a tall device measuring 162.5 x 77 x 7.8 mm and
weighing 183 g. The glass back has gently curved edges to make it more
comfortable in the hand. However, this should be considered primarily as a
two-handed device.
An all-glass body is standard for 2018, and the Galaxy A9 is
available in three attractive colors that benefit from Samsung's advanced
anodizing process. On the back there is a fingerprint sensor and of course the
important quad-camera device, which we will learn more about in the following.
A single speaker graces the bottom edge, along with a USB-C port, and a rarity
in a 3.5mm headphone jack today. The 3,800 mAh battery supports fast charging,
but unfortunately no wireless connection. There is also no confirmation that
the A9 is waterproof.
Features and
specifications:
Before we get to the cameras, there are a few other details
worth mentioning. The Galaxy A9 comes standard with 128GB of memory, which is
great for a midrange device. This can be extended via the micro-SD slot by a
further 512 GB, resulting in a total of 640 GB! A Qualcomm Snapdragon 660
octa-core processor is at the heart of the A9, a perfectly decent chip.
Depending on your region, this will be accompanied by 6GB or 8GB of RAM.
Software:
The Galaxy A9 comes standard with Android 8.0 Oreo and as
always decorated with the Samsung Experience Skin. To be honest, this once
annoying overlay in the last iterations has become a much nicer environment,
losing its glaring colors and crazy possibilities for more sophistication.
Samsung has promised an Android 9 Pie update for the Galaxy A9, but there are
no details of when this might happen.
