The HTC Desire 12 Plus convinces with its attractive
appearance, its large screen and the configuration with two cameras for the
money. However, the shortcomings of the phone - such as a slow camera, a
plastic design and the lack of some key features - make it harder to compare
when compared to other increasingly competitive home appliances.
The low-cost Desire series from HTC was revived this year
with the Desire 12 and Desire 12 Plus. Both phones continue the proud tradition
of offering solid specifications at a below-average price, all packaged in a
beautiful design. In the coveted flagship sector of the market, it does not
look wrong. With a powerful Snapdragon 450 chipset, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage
and a spacious 6 "display, the Desire 12 Plus offers everything you need
to impress on paper, especially at £ 199 (approximately $ 265).
Design:
If you look at the HTC Desire 12 Plus when lying flat on a
table, you would swear that it was made of glass, as is the case with many
leading smartphones. The moment you exhaust it, it's obvious that this is a
budget-priced device with first-class claims. The shiny back is indeed made of
acrylic, which makes the phone feel light (it only weighs 157.5 grams) and is a
bit cheap. However, it is as much a fingerprint magnet as a glass-backed
device. As the "plus" in the name suggests, this could be called
"phablet" in terms of size. It measures 158.2 x 76.6 x 8.4 mm, but
never feels too big during use, thanks to its light weight and slim profile.
On the back of the Desire 12 Plus is the fast and accurate
fingerprint scanner. It is located exactly where your fingers are during normal
use. Underneath is a very discreet HTC logo, and at the top - in the upper left
corner - is the dual-camera setup and an LED flash. Next to it is a single
microphone with noise reduction. The top and bottom panels are slightly larger
than the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. The 2.5D glass allows for a slight curvature
around the edge of the display where it strikes the main body of the phone,
further enhancing the pleasantly rounded corners.
The top of the HTC Desire 12 Plus is completely empty while
the bottom edge fits into the 3.5mm headphone jack, mono speaker, call
microphone and micro USB port. The latter disappointed most major Android phone
manufacturers have now switched to USB Type-C. On the left side is the dual SIM
tray (which can also be used with a Micro SD card to expand the available
space), and on the right side is the power button and the volume rocker. The
former consists of structured metal, the latter of plastic.
Display:
The Desire 12 plus 6-inch IPS LCD screen offers plenty of
room to watch movies, games and surf the web. It has a resolution of 720 x
1440, which in turn provides a pixel density of about 268 pixels per inch.
Still, colors look natural and contrast is decent, and HTC even includes a
color temperature option in the settings, so you can configure the display to
your own liking. The 18: 9 aspect ratios brings the Desire 12 Plus in line with
the 2018 Android flagships and makes consuming media content on the phone a
real pleasure - though it's worth noting that there are still some Android apps
available have not been adapted to fit large and long displays.
